‘Homegrown’ Terror Still a Threat

Hobbled by drone attacks in Pakistan, al Qaeda may not pose a "direct national-security threat," but its existence still puts the U.S. in danger from "al Qaeda-trained or -inspired" terrorists, writes al Qaeda expert Peter Bergen in Foreign Policy. Examining the stories of several terrorists, both native and foreign-born, who operated in the United States since 9/11—including the Afghan-American Najibullah Zazi, who was allegedly planning what one terror commentator described as "Mumbai-on-the-Hudson," and the suspected Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan—Bergen finds an "interesting mix" of militants who run the gamut from "lone wolves" to those "plug[ged] directly into al Qaeda central." Bergen concludes that there is still a "small minority of American Muslims [who] are not immune to the al Qaeda ideological virus." Bergen writes that the Patriot Act, in easing agencies' ability to share intelligence, may be the strongest post-9/11 force in preventing a serious domestic terror attack—along with a belief in the "American Dream," prevalent among the largely well-educated and wealthy community of American Muslims.

Plantagenet

Good to see Bush's Patriot Act getting the credit it deserves for exposing domestic terrorists and derailing domestic terror plots. One of the smartest things Obama did when he took office was to ignore his own leftwingnuts and keep the Patriot Act.

Recruiting is an ongoing effort in many mosques in the US.
-------
NPR has the latest:

A federal judge in Minneapolis is set to unseal a roster of documents charging as many as eight new people with terrorism offenses related to the disappearance of young Somali-Americans to fight for a terrorist organization in Somalia, NPR has learned.

Wake up America, the enemy is recruiting in our neighborhoods.

9-11 is an indelible memory of horror. The most serious question that we need to answer is why do so many hate us? This question is not seriously addressed by most, and in its place the question "how do we hit them back even harder" comes to dominate the discussion. This creates a perpetual cycle of violence rather than rapprochement.

Why is he focused entirely on Muslims? What about McVeigh and the man and his group who killed Dr. Tiller?

I'm sure maladapted can speak for himself but that's not what I got from his post. You really have a distorted view of all posters as well as yourself. It seems you hold yourself as being above the rest and that's not a good sign. I don't need you to tell me what I think when you're own thinking is so skewed. We are pretty much all the same; no one is particularly better or worse than the next. Just spewing makes you less interesting. Do you think you know these posters well enough to comment that they want America destroyed. It seems to me that your behavior is far more destructive. Now I know you'll come back with some witty insult but that doesn't change how distorted your views are.

"Home" Grown Terror Still A Threat That's why we have to do away with anchor babies. Illegals come to this country have children who are called anchor babies {automatic citizenship} . This children are brough up with their parent's culture instead of becoming more Amercanized.

They are isolated and this is where they build up hate.

Let's not forget the most successful homegrown terrorists have been white and "Christian" fundamentalists.
