DEBUNKED

McCartney Won't Get Beatles Catalogue

One of Michael Jackson's most well known assets, the Beatles music catalogue, will not be left to its rightful owner. Paul McCartney has posted on his website that he will not receive rights to the songs. This contradicts rumors that said otherwise. McCartney also debunked the idea that he was upset at not regaining his creations. He said the notion of his inclusion in Jackson's will was completely media-fabricated and "something I didn't believe for a second." Jackson gained ownership of the catalogue after placing the winning bid—$47.5 million—to buy it from British mogul Sir Lew Grade in 1985.

If you are familiar with this story, and in any way connected to songwriting, you just "get" what happened here.

It's not just that Jackson stabbed someone in the back who had extended friendship, musical collaboration, and even opened up his home to him. More than this, this is the story of a SONGWRITER, who understood first-hand the composer's "need" (1) to own what he himself (or she herself) has created, (2) to have exclusive rights to the fruit of your creation, and (3) to have reasonable control over where, when, and how your creation is used.

Jackson understood the above as a songwriter, but he elected to disregard it, to deprive another songwriter whom he previously called Friend, because of money.

At the end of his shortened life, the following might be said of Michael Jackson:

(1) Jackson will go down as one of the most famous and enigmatic entertainers ever.

(2) Jackson made a lot of $ in his life and earned a reputation as being a smart and shrewd business man.

(3) At the time of his death, for a man having so many fans, he had almost no real friends. Real friends don't enable terminal drug use.

(4) He wasn't a happy man, and was never adequately treated for his psychological problems.

(5) From the Beshir special we know he was incredibly materialistic. Maybe if he had placed friendship and loyalty over his narcisistic, self-focused, and material desires - I don't know, maybe he would have been a little happier.

Okay, Rdschenkel the shrink!! Bashir interview, the yellow journalism one....ag shame!!

Wasn't MacCartney who told MJ about music catalogues? and didn't Paul ask Yoko Ono to put in money for the bidding, of which Yoko thought there were too expensive? it was a bidding, and Rolling Stone reports that it took a whole year for Jackson to acquire it after Paul McCartney could not reach the amount needed. so it was survival of the fittest and they were not initially owned by Paul McCartney just as MJ did not owe his music catalogue for sometime, its the capitalist game at its highest, isn't that what america is about. regarding Jackson's shortened life, he is an example of an extreme america, material gains, and excess moneys, and there are a lot like him, at least we know he is not bankrupt cause he continues making money while you and I make comments on this site!!

maybe I am wrong, but I thought Macca and friends sold off the songbook for $$$$, long ago and MJ just happened to buy it when it came up for sale. Apparently outbid cheap Paul. Is it really just his songbook. Maybe there was a little bit of Lennon, Harrison and Starr in those songs.
