Mrs. Sanford Speaks Out, Again
Making up, perhaps, for an apparent dearth of communication between husband and wife over the course of Mark Sanford's affair, Jenny Sanford is speaking to the press again with yet another lengthy statement invoking God, family, and the institution of marriage. This time, the love guv's wife is emphasizing the progress her husband has made since owning up to his extramarital affair: "Mark has stated that his intent and determination is to save our marriage, and to make amends to the people of South Carolina." Though earlier statements claimed that "his [Mark's] career is not a concern of mine," the new statement is cautiously optimistic about Mark's career, but stops just short of asking the public to give her husband a second chance: "In that spirit of forgiveness, it is up to the people and elected officials of South Carolina to decide whether they will give Mark another chance as well."

I don't know why she feels she has to save her own dignity. I get the feeling that is what she is doing here. She is taking on more than she should and certainly more than he deserves. I think for her kids sake she is doing this and somehow it almost looks like a plea for him but I don't think that is the case at all. Sad that he has put her in this situation and sad that she feels the need to work her way out of it.

Can you imagine a man forgiving his wife if she had put him through what Gov. Sanford has done, and in so public a way? And now he says he is going to try to fall back in love with his wife! I know she has children, but where is her pride? I thought she was smart in the way she originally handled this affair, but now she is like all the 'other' wronged wives and is putting up with this public humilitation. Get a spine. Feminism is dead.
She might as well have gone on the stand with him at the press conference. To go through days of hearing him talk about how much he loved the other woman is a bit more than I could have taken. He made and fool of himself and humiliated his wife and children. What is wrong with her?

It is Jenny's choice, you would do best to accept that and trust that she knows what is best for her family and herself.

Their marriage is entirely irrelevant, though I genuined do hope Jenny finds it in her heart to forgive him since marriage really is an intrinsic good despite everything else.

Newswoman was right to point out that when a guy basically tells the whole world he is in love with someone else, his true soul mate, it is time for his long-suffering wife to show him the door. I will bet a whole lot of women who don't consider themselves feminists feel the same way.

When people of faith make mistakes like Sanford it is difficult for those who do not have such faith to understand forgiveness and its value in restoring wholeness. However, I do not understand why Mrs. Sanford feels it necessary to make such public pronouncements. Forgiveness in these situations is a private matter between her, her family, husband and God. All she is doing here is setting her family up for more ridicule from ignorant and hateful people that are happy to see someone fall and be in pain.
Why is it Mrs. Sanford speaks out to the media about these personal matters?
I'll hazard a guess:
The many Christian marriages I've seen fail over the years due to infidelity -- the wives (and husbands once in a while) just love to obsess about the other person's infidelity, and lord it over the cheating-spouse as the "dutiful, righteous, godly spouse". It's like they are getting off on public display of how they are hanging on their own cross for the "marriage", even when love and any real respect died years prior. If the the Sanford's do stay together, I think it will be a loveless, dry, torturous marriage...especially as it seems Mr. Sanford has been looking for love elsewhere (if not acting on it in body, certainly in mind) for quite some time, which points to deep dissatisfaction in the marriage. Of course, this model doesn't fit in with the "forgiveness" model that so many people like to espouse...but some people can't forgive some actions.
That has nothing to do with faith....more the lack of. He told the world that he loved another woman and that the other woman is his soul-mate. What part of that is difficult to understand. He needs to step down from office and they can go on "in faith" together to solve their problems. He called for everyone else who made his kind of mistake to step down so why does he think himself better than they. Hypocrits....the both of them

Here are a few reasons why perhaps Jenny Sanford "feels it necessary to make such public pronouncements":
1) She's a narcissist and actually enjoying her 15-plus minutes of fame.
2) She's not actually 'willing' to forgive him but instead is laying the groundwork for a costly, drawn-out public battle.
3) She does not--unlike other faithful, as yourself--believe that forgiveness in "these situations is a private matter between her, her family, husband and God." Maybe she includes the entire American public? The world?
Every Republican who cheats on his wife should resign from public office. Every Democrat who doesn't pay his or her taxes, or who doesn't use union labor to build their campaign offices or in any of their personal business endeavors should also resign from public office. On second thought.... let's just throw them all out of public office and START OVER. REVOLUTION AGAIN IN 2010!!!!

Just for the record - if the voters of South Carolina decide to forgive the governor, that doesn't mean they should want him to continue to be their governor. It's not the affair - it's the abandonment of his duties - and the lack of transparency of how he paid for those dalliances.
As far as their marriage goes - it's absolutely none of my business and I wish Mrs. Sanford would just respect OUR privacy and stop talking about it.

I just have a question: Why is it if you're a governor,a senator,a president,etc. and have an affair with another woman the wife always "stands by her man" and gives him another chance. It's already been correctly pointed out that most of these wives have money/careers of their own so it can't be security. But yet out here in the boondocks if a man cheats on his wife his ass is kicked out in the cold(as it should be)--What's that all about?. Just wondered.
I've seen plenty of marriages, er, out in the boonies *grin* where the cuckolded spouse stays with the cheater -- they don't want to disappoint friends, family, kids, vows, etc. We just notice people in the public eye staying with spouses more as it's brought to the publics' attention.
It's different for politicians or rather it appears to be. I remember there was a time when wives and husbands killed one another for adultery. Some even called it justifiable homicide. It makes me wonder how Mark Sanford would feel if Jenny Sanford hooked herself up with a well hung stud who serviced her so well. What would that good old boy say when Jenny commented. "Wow, you were right. It's so much better to find someone who makes you feel good." I think senator Sanford would be screaming at the top of his lungs how unchristian she was. Jenny Sanford might be weak kneed and stupidly loyal, but senator Sanford is the real bag of puss here.
I would love to hear what Mrs. Sanford said about Bill Clinton when he cheated. Anyone heard anything?

Jenny Sanford lost her credibility with the public when she allowed herself to be treated like a doormat by her husband. The churches teach 'forgiveness', but 'pride' is denigrated. I'll take the latter anyday.
The Governor's embarassment here is in the public confessional- so schoolgirl (I know I shouldn't have, but I'm in love...) and the wife's rebuttal so blatently pitiful (push to the high ground first, then you can leave him and not deal with the humiliation.) The Governor has already admitted to "multiple" instances of straying beyond a married man's boundaries, and worse yet for his wife who is willing to let him attempt to fall "back" in lover with her, that he has already "met his ultimate soul mate." The only thing missing is a trip to rehab - the institutional excuse for political mindless and thoughtless behavior. We often choose the leaders we deserve, not often enough the one's we need. Disgusting and disgraceful for all involved- particularly sad legacy for his sons.
