Murdoch's Google Threat

CS - Murdoch
Rob Griffith / AP Photo

Rupert Murdoch may have the secret to saving newspapers—forcing readers to pay for content. However, search engines such as Google, which allows users to bypass pay walls on such Murdoch-owned sites as The Wall Street Journal, have complicated that plan. During an interview with Sky News Australia, the newspaper mogul said that papers including The Sun, The Times of London, and The Wall Street Journal would contemplate blocking Google completely once their pay walls were ready. In recent months, Murdoch has blasted Google, calling it a "parasite" and accusing it of "kleptomania" for including News Corp. content on Google News. Murdoch also said that he did not think Google's usage of News Corp. content constituted "fair use" under the law, a defense aggregation websites have used to justify their reproduction of excerpts from news stories.

Google or Murdoch? I'd go with Google every time. Google provides easy access to unfettered information. Murdoch wants to levy tolls on access to misinformation.

Murdoch vs. Google will be the battle of the titans. If there is no sustainable for-profit content model, the quality of the content will continue to deteriorate.

It is important for the distribution of news to be a viable private industry. The distribution of information is a global human need. And it's operation and implementation has to be kept separate from any government agency.

Hmmm...be blocked from viewing and Murdock content...I COULD ONLY HOPE! *lol*

I'll take Google over crazy-aussie-religious-dirtbag any day. I am also guessing the Google Geeks could pwn the Murdockian IT drones in a NY second.

Google owns so many InterNet 'pipes', totally private networks, that almost any attempt to block Google would fail.

At worst all Google would have to do is to buy a subscription and get legal access.

P.S. Murdoch has a U,S, passport.

I was wondering why I was seeing more FOX news links in Google as of late.
My advice to Google is to give Murdoch exactly what he wants, remove Fox from the search index and let it survive on its own with no rank.
Paid news subscriptions on the net would be a catastrophe for all these companies.
So Murdoch read my lips if you want to survive, "SUBSCRIPTION BASED MODELS ARE DEAD"

Murdoch: what you don't realise is that I wouldn't even consider reading your rags except for the fact Google provided links and, by using them, you collected ad revenue from ads on your web pages some of which were placed there through ... Google!

He is a greedy media tyrant that has lost his way

Time for him to sell up and retire.

In 1985 Murdoch became a United States citizen to satisfy legislation that only United States citizens could own American television stations. This also resulted in Murdoch losing his Australian citizenship.

Go Google! Who in their right mind would be willing to pay for newspapers that aren't fit to wrap fish in?

Didn't every newspaper try to go to a paid internet model like 10 years ago and fail miserably? I remember coming across those New York Times and Wall Street Journal paywalls and just navigating away to another site that would give me the exact same information for free. This is the news- even China can't control access to it. Information wants to be free.

Though maybe it is pushing it to call the contents of a Murdoch rag "information".

What is that old publicity motto?

Most people who read news on the internet are probably not going to go out and buy the papers anyway.

What next, charge the doctor or dentist for having it in the waiting room?

Any reading of their material should be a good sign, maybe someone WILL decide it is so great they will subscribe!

What is next?

Thrift shops can't sell used clothes, car lots can't sell old cars, food banks can't give away food.

People make enough money to not nit pick like this.
