SHOCKING

Joe DiMaggio Bares All

CS - Joe Dimaggio
Courtesy of gallery Modernism

A full-frontal nude of baseball great Joe DiMaggio, showering after a game, is currently on view in the exhibition Hunted and Gathered at the gallery Modernism in San Francisco. The photograph, which was taken around 1940, reveals the naked Yankee slugger soaking wet and grinning happily. It is part of a collection of quirky, anonymous photographs assembled by Robert Flynn Johnson, curator emeritus of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. When asked where he got the photo, Johnson joked, "I have friends in low places."

I thought this was a site which presented newsworthy items. This display of a demeaning photo which abuses the privacy of Mr DiMaggio is disgusting. It truely goes beyond the pale! Is this site run by adolescent lasivious individuals without a shred of integrity?

Why do people fear the penis so much in this country?

And the DB should also make sure they censor all images of Michelangelo's "David" on their site, too! Nudity! Mon dieu! What is the world coming to?

Sounds like you're the one that is not old enough to handle human sexuality. This is another example of why people that preach abstinence are insane; and why kids that are taught the absurd idea are actually 4 times more likely to have teenage pregnancies.

I too wonder why people in America are so scared of the penis (or the vagina, or breasts...); cognitive dissonance anyone?

Meh. I think you meant to click CNN.com. Who cares really? I don't find this story very entertaining either, but I do like the fact the Daily Beast isn't so politically correct, and sometimes even a little gritty. It's also a lot more light-hearted and less doom and gloom than other news sites.

This is not appropriate for young children! How can you publish a penis even from 1940?

Who ever said this website is appropriate for young children? It never has been -- they have published nudity often, though usually female. I asusme that's no more appropriate for kids than this. I don't think TDB promotes itself as being appropriate for kids.

Yep. Art Beast almost always has some sort of artistic nudity. Doesn't seem Joe minded the pic being taken either. Big deal.

I'm sure kids these days can see more nudity than this picture if they really wanted.
I work in the medical field and i can't tell you how many people i see that get colon cancer and breast cancer cervical cancer because they are ashamed to show their private parts to their Docs, that is because in America we make the naked body such taboo. We are not ashamed about any other part of our bodies why only the parts that are used to produce precious life, are we ashamed. so people get over it already.

I agree with celiamedeiros61. We as Americans do attach way too much shame to nudity and sexuality. And as a teacher I can tell you that people should be far more ashamed about what comes out of their mouths than they are about their bodies. Or what comes out of their keyboards for that matter.

And why is this not appropriate? He's taking a shower for God's sake. It's a human body. The only reason children are ashamed of nudity, is because their parents teach them to be.

neo, any "young children" that may be browsing the DB looking for this--gasp!--penis shouldn't be shocked to find if they're old and/or clever enough to get this far.

If they're not, then I nominate you the bad parent watch dog. Go forth and scold.

Maybe Paul Simon's song "Mrs. Robinson" said it best.
"Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio"

Can't see why Marylin Monroe divorced him ?

first of all his penis is not bad at all. this man just got out of a shower with a bunch of other men and you expect him for him to be sporting wood or something? I'm sure the man is a grower.

He was un-mutilated and intact the way nature intended. He looks great. I can't believe how stupid Americans are; no different from the tribes that mutilate their young girls' genitals.

I have no problem with publishing / exhibiting these kinds of photos if common courtesies were observed. For example, did DiMaggio ever give permission for the photo to be taken / published? Were family members asked about it, just out of courtesy? If "yes" on all these questions, then no problem and very nice photo.

He obviously didn't care that the photo was being taken. In fact he seems to be smiling. Great photo. Softens his gruff image quite a bit.

Easy everybody. Photography as Art. It shows a different side of a Baseball Legend. Try to have a sense of humor. Don't like it, then move on.

As several have already pointed out ...

The absurd and illogical idea that the human body in its nature state is somehow obscene ... is way more disturbing.

I find the fact that we must hide the human body and label it obscene ... is the ultimate obscenity

How sad.

I will defer to Paul Simon for my comment:

" "Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?
Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
What's that you say, Mrs. Robinson?
Joltin' Joe has left and gone away."
