Obama: Asia Trip About Jobs
Out of the country for an eight-day trip across Asia, President Obama said in his weekly address on Saturday that his travels were meant to secure help for the economy. “As we emerge from the worst recession in generations, there is nothing more important than to do everything we can to get our economy moving again and put Americans back to work, and I will go anywhere to pursue that goal," Obama said in a recorded message from Seoul. He added that increasing America's exports abroad could "help create new jobs at home and raise living standards throughout the world." Taking on the role of family budgeter in chief, he called on consumers to be wary during holiday shopping of “more and more debt," and said Americans must “spend less, save more.”

jaydeekay
We have emerged from the recession?
hfb1053
Actually, I think he said "as we emerge" implying that we are beginning to break out of the recession but I certainly get your point. On the other hand, it's not going to be that yesterday we were in a recession and tomorrow, poof, we won't be; we will emerge from the recession slowly and he's trying to help.
Plantagenet
The Dems have been boasting that the recession is over ever since we had positive GDP growth in the 3rd quarter. Certainly for the dem's corporate masters at Goldman Sachs things are great.......but for the average people, the record unemployment, record poverty, record deficits, record youth unemployment etc. that are occuring on Obama's watch make the Obama recession the worse recession in decades.
rawww1
Typical B.S. from a lying conservative who can't accept the fact that the Republicans OWN this recession because of libertarian economic policies. Alan Greenspan and his Ayn Rand-inspired ideas were the root cause of our economic problems and the fact that conservatives still believe in them is easily the worst threat facing this country today. And that you think Goldman Sachs didn't own the Republicans illustrates your idiocy better than anything I can write.
The jobs issue is a result of globalization policies. We should bow to China? How bout we tax 90% of any corporation's revenues if they're caught outsourcing jobs instead? While we're at it we can slap high tarriffs on imported goods as well. Free trade doesn't work if your trading partner-China-doesn't abide by the same rules.
jaydeekay
I would say the recession isn't officially over until people are working.
But that's just me... a worker. I guess if I was a politician, as long as the rich boys aren't hemorrhaging money anymore then there is no recession any more.
Everyone... it's not the GOP (however ignorant their adherents are) that are for the rich and the Dems that are for the poor. No... it's ALL politicians are for the rich (being that the vast majority ARE rich), no matter their political affiliation.
Take the whole healthcare debacle... I am in 100% agreement that there should be MAJOR healthcare reformation in this country being that we, who claim to be so good and civilized, have some of the worst healthCARE (not technology) in the Western world. But this healthcare bill does NOT A THING towards real reformation. All it does is make those who cannot afford it be damned if they don't have it.
Screw any mention of 'death panels'... that is a GOP canard. What is NO canard is the fact that this bill only enhances the insurance company holdings while offering nothing to the consumer (other than threats of fines and jail... which the jail won't happen, but the fines WILL).
When will people wake up to the fact that the representatives we have to represent us in this supposed Representative Democracy are only representing their own fortunes and futures?
But no... people have to find a bandwagon to jump onto. They have to hitch their trailer to a political party; "I AM THAT PARTY AND THAT PARTY IS ME!"
Egos are stroked... felling like big important people because you like this guy/girl who wrote this book/article about how they want to save the state/country/world and just how this can be accomplished with YOUR INDIVIDUAL support. And you all smile and feel so important because you now have a MISSION, a CAUSE to rally around that is YOUR OWN cause!!
It's so... ignorant. It's so... blissfully pathetic.
Very few people in this country (world) know how to be their own person. Most have to be told how to act, walk, talk... what to think about and how to think about it... who to associate with and why... who to listen and take 'orders' from.
We are not the United States of America.
We are the United States of Automatons.
Let freedom ring.

End of the recession???
No, we are just getting started.
My company is letting 10% of the workforce go in Jan (they don't know yet).
There are plenty of other businesses in the NY are considering similar actions.
Nice post though. Too true regarding the professional politicians (R and D) who have helped destroy this country.
periscope
Your characterization of the healthcare bill is inaccurate. Not that I think this is the best bill the Congress could produce, but given the composition of the Senate and House, which is filled with Republican and Democratic conservatives, who demanded and got compromises for their patron Special Interests (the Insurance Companies and Big Pharma), this puny bill is more of a "first step" than a "final solution" to our national healthcare problem.
Obviously the best solution would be a single-payer system without any profiteering private insurers. If we could extend Medicare to everyone, that would be the ideal.
Americans currently pay over $2 trillion/year for healthcare, which is twice the rate per capita that other industrialized nations pay. Ergo: there's a lot of money to be saved by dumping Private insurers and Big Pharma's lock on Medicare. But to do that we need a Congress that will be of, for and by the people, and as the monolithic Republican Party currently shows, that ain't the case!
jaydeekay
I agree with the single payer model.
What we are getting in no way brings us closer to that.
There are still PLENTY of people in this country who don't believe healthcare should be a corollary of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness... which I do not understand.
What we are getting is being forced to pay rent. If you are a citizen of the US, you HAVE to pay for healthcare now (if and when the bill is passed). That is rent for being a citizen.
Or, if you will... it is a gigantic tax for something that most everyone in this country agrees NEEDS reformation, yet no reformation is offered for being taxed.
I get what you are getting at, periscope... I agree that the stranglehold the insurance companies/big drug has on this nation is pathetic and MUST be changed. But periscope... how does this bill help out that notion? ALL this does is add more people to the insurance company/big drug payrolls... enabling an even more forceful stranglehold to be had by these pathetic versions of human beings.
This is not a step in any way... it is placation to the ones holding the purse strings. The rich are only going to get richer from this. And richer and richer and richer. And richer.
I don't see how anyone who feels sick because of the big businesses in this country can be anywhere near approving of this bill.
periscope
The rich will get richer at the expense of everyone else, until or unless we have a government of the people and for the people. The only way I see that happening is if we have real campaign finance reform, where all elections are publicly funded and where any candidate who takes private donations, becomes a pariah and is voted out of office or not into office in the first place.
We can't ban private donations because the right-wing Supreme Court ruled that "money" equals "free speech." So the next best thing is to allow private donations to continue, but not elect anyone who takes it.
It's a tall order, but American will continue to be terribly exploited by the greedy rich and their corporations until we do.
jaydeekay
Again... I agree with you.
But ALL the politicians in Washington are 100% AGAINST that notion.
GOP and DEM.
BOTH are being paid, wined & dined, vacationed, sexed up by the VERY SAME PEOPLE.
And all we do is b!tch about what SHOULD be done. What SHOULD happen in this country. And then rally around the ones who sound like they COULD accomplish these goals... but never even come close to doing.
And we act so damned surprised that they don't... EVERY SINGLE TIME!
How can I not believe that we humans have become a pathetic species?

winnie: when it comes to "delusional" you practically define the term. Let's do some basic arithmetic, okay? Bushboy stole the presidency in 2001 and took over when we had $200 billion/year surpluses and a decreasing national debt, which stood at $5 trillion.
Bushboy left office and the surpluses had been turned into $1 trillion/year deficits and the national debt had been doubled to $10 trillion!!!
Obama has been in office a little over 10 months, and inherited Bushboy's annual deficit, two wars, a collapsed economy and rising unemployment.
By the end of this year, the national debt will be over $11 trillion, but there was no way Obama could avoid that without turning the Bushboy/Republican Recession into another Great Depression.
I know this is all over your head. So if you want to slink back into the dunce's corner and play with yourself, we all understand.
diamondgirl
I never agree with you, you are a left wing liberal who loves all those tax increasing hand outs that Obama is killing us with. Bush is just a guilty, he started this Socilism program by pay off the Dems with programs and pork to get their votes on the wars he is just as corrupt. Two wrongs dont make it right
jaydeekay
LOL!
I just love how the arguments change over time.
The shrub was once the LEADER, for good or bad. Now that we have a much different leader, he's not really the LEADER... oh, and the last guy was bad too (now).
diamondgirl
You may not like my comment, but that's what I have felt, the more I hear about Bush the more I learn how it got to be such a mess in this Government. Obama is a true Socialist; he wants this Country to be nothing but Socialism, hand outs for the 40 % of people who don't pay taxes. If any country in the world, the United States has the ability to help those who are uneducated and without jobs to be taught through education to be productive citizens. Instead the Democrats want to keep giving those Hand outs to the poor instead of educating them. They like keeping them down and under their thumbs so they will vote to keep Dems in office and the hand outs coming.
For any of you who doubt this, take a look at those who are poor and uneducated, a lot of inner cities, all races, Ask yourself this question, is poverty getting better or worse?
We have the Democrats in most inner cities who have been controlling them for years, with that you have crime, drugs, murder etc. With all the programs for these people have available, ask you self another question is it making life better for them?
If they were given a way to train them in computers, construction, enginnering, the sky is the limit, these people would become taxpaying citizens who will no longer need the government to enable them any longer.
Wake up America, it can be done, it should be done, for every American, instead of just handing them Fish, teach them all how to Fish...
winston1
periscope I can make claim obama stole the election from Hillary between acorn and SEIU. I was not for the Iraq war and not crazy about Bush. But let's be truthful your obama has tripled our debt, apologized to every country in the world, bowed to heads of countries, which is stupid protocol.
Now besides that he is doing nothing about creating jobs, fixing the economy and not doing a damn thing about Afghanistan. He jets all over the world and just loves adulation. Obama is narcissist and a egomanic. I can go on and on
Obama can avoid going deeper in debt. Kill the health care bill, it is going to cripple this country. periscope I hope you took your head out of your A-- long enough to read my response.

If he thinks he's going to cajole Asia into easing their import rules to buy US manufactured products (besides agricultural products, which are not labor intensive) he's having a pipe dream. He should announce to the Chinese an imposition of import tariffs (and for that matter, the rest of the world as well) until the tterms of trade can be rebalanced. He should tell them the truth: our trade imbalances are unsustainable and, if not immediately addressed, will result in a collapse of US dollar denominated assetts.
Stop the grovelling. It's unbecoming in the leader of the free world.
Johnnyappleseed
The job creation he was talking about must have been those for the Chinese, after his stimulis package, bank bailout, tarp program, cash for clunkers, takeover of the auto industry, the carbon tax, how could anyone second guess all the jobs he has saved and the ones created by those programs?
They literally could total in the HUNDREDS.

tell me again how we get out of the medicare hole
rawww1
Easy: gov't option to reduce the price of drugs and therefore reduce medicare's unfunded liability. You can cap that off by legalizing and taxing marijuana and if that's not enough tax the rich.
What the right wing doesn't understand is that european-style socialism works. It's why Sweden is one of the best places to live in the world and why the U.S. has a third-world health care system in parts of the country.

An enactment of the Pay For Play bill would give over 15 million Americans jobs as Sex Workers. The strongest opposition against its passage comes from older women. They fear it would make them uncompetitive in a youth oriented culture. Sex workers would have to give 10% of their income to Uncle Sam. In return they would be given free health insurance.

Amen. That prostitution is illegal and unregulated spreads disease and encourages mistreatment of women. Prostitution should be legal and de-stigmatized. No one feeling differently can articulate anything resembling a coherent argument.
periscope
You are an obsessive, compulsive ignoramus. Please stop with these idiotic projections. Yes, the roof will collapse if we don't do anything, but we have rescued Medicare in the past and we can do it again.
How can it be done? Stop paying Big Pharma the "donut hole" payments that Bushboy and the Republican Party set up back in 2006. These pay Big Pharma far more for drugs than they charge foreign nations and doesn't allow Medicare to have an open bidding system. Potential savings? $10 billion/year, which over 75 years is over $750 billion.
Stop the fraud perpetrated against Medicare, which amounts to nearly $800 billion/year. This fraud is committed by small criminals and large (the Insurance and Hospital industry), which over-charge or in fact, present false charges. To do this we need to increase Medicare security and confirmation of charges being made - something the Bushboy and Republican Party were loath to do. Potential 75 year savings? $60 trillion.
There are also gains that could be made by promoting less obesity and more healthful eating and exercising by the American people, which could cut the costs for diabetes and other rampant diseases.
The fact is there is much that can be done, but it won't get done with a monolithic, reactionary and criminal Republican Party, which only acts to protect the rich or the rich corporations.
If you want to obsess about something, obsess about how we can get rid of the Republican obstructionists.
jaydeekay
I'm afraid that it isn't going to be done by the Democrats, either.
Don't you realize this?
They are the same people... just appealing to different bases. They want the same things... power and control. The two parties just have differing views on how to achieve it.
periscope
It is inane to say that the Democratic Party and the Republican Party have the same track record. It just isn't so. Not that I'm thrilled with the Democrats, as many of them are not the New Deal loyalists they should be. But the crimes of the Republican Party have been monstrous, and until or unless we get rid of these miscreants, our country will be held hostage to the most reactionary and greediest factions amongst us.
jaydeekay
The GOP and the DEMS are the very same people who just use different ways to achieve the same goals... power, influence, control, riches.
How and why is it that every single politician in Washington but a very few are rich?
Jumping on a horse because it's just a little better than the other horse only puts off your death from decay and corruption for just a little while.
Why not forgo the horses entirely and find a much better means of transportation that won't ultimately throw you off the cliff?

jaydeekay and periscope,th e people in the country are strangled. and 70% of america, is getting sicker by the days,of everyone. People have seen the bailouts,go to huge companies, those who could not fail, but were rewarded to fail. And all ,parties, politicians, from all parties are still sitiing and yacking and grandstanding on tv, and no one resigned ,was fired thrown out, thier healthcare removed, their retirements, and social and political power taken away from them. And its true the chinese do not spend, they save, and we all have to cut back everyone, has had to cut back. So what has the govt, done,? grow.We could be just fine with half of all the politicians, what has been their sacrifice, many were also part of the past years of failure. The president is trying, but they lost focus. The most important thing was to reach out to mainstream, homes, jobs, businesses, families, retraining.Unfortunately no one can do anything about anythign. But, the mood on the streets is turning on the same Democrats, that people had hope with.I am stunned, at the change, everywhere. It does not matter, the last administration destroyed us,but the congress was part of it, all this downfall happened how???With all the people in charge, making policies, wathcing over their constituents,no one cared. And maybe the hope, for the Democrats cannot be met.by them.No one is working with mainstream the banks, the companies, the rehiring, rebuilding not happening. The country, our futures, our livelyhoods,of our families, are in peril and at stake. We are no longer the greatest, super power a few years from now.We better see how the politicians start to get their acts together, because there is an ugly feeling growing in this country.Greed runs in both parties, all parties, all religions, allraces, and the country suffers. What sacrifice, has washington, all the politicians, done??has their lunches, spenditures, parties, airplane flights, retirements, healthcare taken a hit????As for Nanci Pelosi, she is extremely desliked by Republican women, and Democrat women,,we continueto be like sheep, upset, angry and we cannot do a dam thing about nothing against argue among all os us who did what.In china if you did not perform your job,you got no bonuses, and no reward, and you kill yourself,or you will have it done for you or go to jail Excuses are not acceptable. The greatest country on earth and we have fallen behind ,and the mamoth growth abroad,is unstapable.?
diamondgirl
Peri, I hate to break it to you but the Dems voted for the wars, and Bush paid them to vote for them. I thought they would get Snowe but they didnt...Strange
diamondgirl
By taxing us more and more and more, thats the way they fix any form of Socialism, Like Medicare.

The latest Quinnipiac poll 51% disapprove and 35% approve, with Independents opposed by a 2-to-1 margin

Yeah, getting Americans to spend less---that will create more jobs, right?
On the other hand, if we spend less that means less inventory will be sold. If less inventory is sold there is less incentive for companies to manufacture or import more.
And how exactly does this motivate them to hire more people?
Of course, Obama could manufacture lots and lots of new jobs if he recreates FDR's New Deal approach to the infrastructure. Like, for example, fixing it?
That puts paychecks in people's hands. And the jobs create tax revenue, don't they?
jaydeekay
The only way out of this recession is time and pain.
An uprising against the masters would help. It would bring pain, and add some time, but wouldn't we ultimately be better off for it?
periscope
Creating jobs has to be Obama's #1 domestic priority for the next year. The Stimulus money should have created far more jobs than it has. Infrastructure is certainly an important area for job growth, as well as renewable energy jobs and more.
We need a massive job growth push from the WH now!!!
jaydeekay
About this idea you will get NO argument from me.
Well said.
winston1
periscope The stimulus bill did nothing to improve job growth, which we should have known since it was laden with pork. I realize libbies don't like to hear these two words "tax cuts" but that is going to help small businesses and some kind of an incentive to get the job market going. Lift restrictions on businesses and reform HC the right way without fines and penalties,so employers do not lay off more people, and open up state borders for competition for insurance.
Also fix our unfair trade and charge China the appropiate amount of money to level the playing field. Give incentives to people to start businesses and tax reductiuons State and Federal.
Johnnyappleseed

As far as the $800 billion in fraud perpetrated against Medicare, it was on "60 Minutes" two weeks ago. Do you ever watch anything but CNBC? (I know you're too smart to watch Fake News).
And as far as the last time we saved Medicare was in the 1980s with the Moynihan Commission, run by the late Senator of NY. You could look it up.
Please spare me anymore "scarey" projections. They're fixable if we can get rid of the Republican Party or at least reduce them to the rump party they ought to be.

*sigh* Obama is not shy about trumpeting his accomplishments - so the fact that this address is just more mushy, blah, blah, blah, means he didn't achieve anything on his Asia trip. I kind of wish he'd just shut up for a while until he has something useful to say.

Wow! He got on a bunch of peeps last nerve, didn't he. What struck me is while he is rolling with the money boys and working on the Columbia "FREE" Trade agreement behind the scenes (I hear Brazil and other south American countries are up to him to bring into the FREE TRADE loop, Clinton did the NAFTA), he is telling us to take it easy on Chirstmas! Now that is a statement of a Washington Elitist.
I have never seen a president elected turn his back on those who brung him as fast as this one and I have been watching closely since Kennedy.
Our government has one agenda, NEW WORLD ORDER BY WAY OR GLOBALIZATION. To my way of thinking, it is not up to Americans to be so charitable as to give our jobs to those who have not the courage to stand up and fight for fairness and equality the way we did so do they really deserve the handouts? But alas, it's not about helping other countries...it's all about helping the big boys get bigger.
I really was disheartened when he kept Geitner and his possy. That ton of money Bush handed over just before he left office was just a high-stakes heist.
AMERICA IS IN BIG TROUBLE AND BETTER FIGHT FOR HER LIFE BECAUSE SHE IS LOSING IT.

"it is not up to Americans to be so charitable as to give our jobs to those who have not the courage to stand up and fight for fairness and equality the way we did so do they really deserve the handouts?"
Very Christian of you. Forgive me if I assume you are a Christian (as I am not, but most in America are).
Would Jesus have been a Republican? I'm thinking no... but, again, I'm a heathen... so what does it matter what I think?

What, exactly, are the exports he has in mind?
Until small business can afford to hire and make products that Europe, Asia, etc. would like to buy, I can't think of one thing other countries need from the US. Wonder if he thought about lowering capital gains? Maybe rescinding NAFTA?
China owns 1 trillion in US treasuries, and the more deficit spending, the more they lose. Eventually there will be inflation, and China isn't going to be a happy camper. Hell, maybe they'll just take our country, instead of importing.........
jaydeekay
You are so d@mn right about inflation. We injected TRILLIONS into the economy, making the only direction for prices to go being UP... WAY UP... in a very quick fashion.
It is going to be unreal.

The exports he has in mind.....errr! jobs?

It is obvious our delusional POTUS will go anywhere - that way he does not have to work, spends lavishly on trips and photo ops, is out of town for critical decisions - thus cannot be blamed!!!!
We have a delusional, clueless, hubris idiot at POTUS. He is totally devoid in leadership ability, management skills, honor, decorum and protocol.
He can spend money - better than any president in this history of this nation - under his watch the federal deficit has tripled, unemployment has risen to a real number of 17.5%, his $1 trillion stimulus is a failure and now he urging the Senate and Congress to ram a noxious health care bill through passage. The saving grace may be, should this bill pass, that it can be undone prior to taking effect, as given Obama's numbers and those of Congress - none will be in office and perhaps sanity will once again prevail in Washington.

Bullshit. The deficit has been a bipartisan effort, mainly fueled by REPUBLICAN control for most of the last TWENTY years, and pay particular attention to the Bush tax cuts, which dropped revenues by $420 billion from 2008, a fall of 17 percent.
To blame the guy currently in office for one year is TOTALLY disingenuous and REEKS of far right talking points..
Where are the REAL republicans??
jaydeekay
They are now called RINOs.
Johnnyappleseed
Down river, you have got it wrong again.

Polcat Excellent! You covered it all.

Answer these questions and then determine who is responsible:
1. who started an unfunded war in !raq, that has cost over $1 trillion and counting?
2. Who started an unfunded war in Afganistan, that have wasted $ billions and counting?
3. Who passed the unfunded Medicare Drug plan whose cost is spirally out of control and accessable to illegal aliens?
4. Who had two or three stimulus packages over 8 years? Where did the money go?
5. Who gave contracts to contractors in Iraq and Afganistan without going through the bid process?
6. Which party left a $500 billion surplus in the budget, that was squandered?
7. What was the deficit when the former Administration left office, at the beginning of 2009?
If you can answer these questions then you can determine why we are in the economic mess we are in and who is to be blamed..
You should watch your manners, and speak to the issues. Insults do not add to the debate, and it shows ignorance.
No President should be left with so many problems:
1. Two unfunded wars
2. A huge growing deficit
3.An unfunded Medicare Drug plan.
4. A broken healthcare system
5. A broken Immigration Policy
7. No energy plan
8. Global warming issues.
9. A broken economy
10 A broken, unfunded education system
What did the former Administration do to address these issues?
Carole65
What's your "therefore"? Just keep spending on massive entitlement programs so that this administration and Congress can oudo the previous one?
diamondgirl
Obama wanted this job, he got it, His way of fixing it is to spend more than the R's, keep the wars going and Create NO JOBS. This in not change, its more of the same.
Thats my answer to your questions, do you understand a word I said?
Thank you.
