Obama Finds Lesson in Malia's Bad Grade
The day after election losses for his party, President Barack Obama left Washington to speak before a kinder, gentler crowd: a group of Wisconsin schoolchildren, one of them a little boy with "OBAMA" shaved into his hair. The president was there to speak about a bipartisan education initiative, but felt the need to refresh the big, unrelated problems facing the country. (Even the Education secretary introduced him as a man dedicated to education "in spite of two wars" and a "really, really tough economy.") Perhaps to soothe his supporters' concerns that his presidency is in trouble, Obama reminded the audience of his successes, saying that Election Day '08 was “a day of hope, it was a day of possibility, but it was also a sobering one" because of the troubles the country faced. Now, he's dealing with "the rescue part" of his job. Obama finally deviated from his script, telling of how his daughter Malia learned to try, try again—to learn science. Her scores had faltered, but she just earned a 95 on a test. Obama said his daughter had learned not to "slack off" and to want success for herself—perhaps a lesson for dejected Democrats.

rhonda again scrapes the bottom of the barrel in her zeal to bash the President. That the thought even occurred to rhonda says a great deal about her, but nothing about Obama.

Somehow I think shaving "Obama" into a kids hair is less disturbing than when I see elementary school children holding pictures of dead fetuses alongside their parents at anti-abortion rallies.
I grew up during the Clinton then Bush years and my generation is pretty jaded when it comes to politics - Democrat or Republican. I think it's nice to see kids interested in politics and their country and maybe even a little proud of the people who represent them. I would hope that, regardless of personal politics, everyone would see the value in that?
That kid is still perfectly likely to vote Republican when he grows up, and he'll probably vote thanks to those crazy parents of his given that kids with parents who vote are more likely to vote when the grow up than kids with parents who don't.
I think he is right though.

I would add that our education system needs to focus on studies that educate versus indoctrinates our children about the world and our society. I dont see the value of demanding a child memorize specific dates of a series of battles in the civil war.
Wouldnt they be better served if they learned how to analyze a corporations spread sheet so that they could better manage an investment? Or learn mathmatics through repetitive fun exercises?
As a parent, in addition to homework from school, I do work with my children in attaining the skills that I think they need to master to be successful in life.
Didn't Hitler do this type of stuff?
