Obama Pressures Burma on Suu Kyi

CS - Thein Sein

During his whirlwind trip to Asia, President Obama told General Thein Sein, Myanmar's prime minister, to release jailed pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The two leaders appeared together at a meeting of the Association of South East Asian Nations, a summit in Singapore. Previously, the U.S. has boycotted the meeting because of Burma's presence. In front of the cameras, the two leaders did not shake hands. Direct talks would have been the first time in 43 years that a U.S. president had met a Burmese leader. According to the BBC, the fact that Obama was willing to sit at the same table as the leader of the Burmese military junta signals a new American desire for engagement with the region.

Ending the junta's rule is the most important thing, otherwise the monks will be back in jail next week and those who died will have done so in vain. I don't support such action in a sovereign country, but someone needs to do something.

It's to the President's credit that he at least tries to open the doors to discussion regarding the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and the treatment of the monks. Myanmar is a police state and for the sake of the people forced to live under their rule, must be treated cautiously.

Boycotting the meeting when Bush was president didn't make any difference. Maybe diplomacy will have a chance to obtain a release for her. I know that's a difficult word for some here.

Do you mean the diplomacy that's working so well with Iran? Are there ever leaders in some countries who say one thing to appease and then do the total opposite in their actions? Remember Chamberlain's meetings with Mussolini & Hitler..........

65: I don't think your comparison to meetings w Mussolini and Hitler are commensurate. Your dentures are showing.

Carole65, your Coulter rant doesn't seem to fit in this case. Are you suggesting that we go to war against General Sein to win her release?

Maybe you should reread my comment...........where did I indicate a war? I merely responded to your comment that diplomocy would make the difference in changing the hearts of beligerent leaders. Sometimes it does, but there are plenty of times that it didn't, as in the ones I sited. Maybe Kai will be released but there would probably have to be a quid pro quo in order to obtain her release. It remains to be seen.............
