Obama: Uncensored Internet Is Good

CS - Obama
Imaginechina / AP Photo

Has President Obama set China on the path toward LOL cats, pornography, and, well, Obama? The American president endorsed an uncensored Internet in a meeting with Chinese students in Shanghai on Monday, lauding the tool that helped launch him to the White House. "I think that the more freely information flows, the stronger the society becomes, because then citizens of countries around the world can hold their own governments accountable," Obama said. "They can begin to think for themselves." Not surprisingly, Obama’s words were broadcast within China only on local Shanghai TV and two Internet broadcasts that the Associated Press says were “choppy and hard to hear.”

I think what disorder is talking about is the fear the ultra conservative Christians have about the Fair Communications act. They have this conspiracy theory (don't they always) whereby Obama is going to use it for censorship against conservative talk radio, and then branch out to stifle the internet, and then of course, TAKE OVER THE WORLD!!! *maniacal laughter*

As always with Obama and the Dems, what they say doesn't match what they do:

"Internet companies and civil liberties groups were alarmed this spring when a U.S. Senate bill proposed handing the White House the power to disconnect private-sector computers from the Internet.......or a revised version that aides to Sen. Jay Rockefeller, a West Virginia Democrat, have spent months drafting behind closed doors....the 55-page draft of S.773 .... appears to permit the president to seize temporary control of all private-sector networks during a so-called cybersecurity emergency."

It will be interesting to see if the democrats pass this bill allowing Obama to take complete control and censor the internet upon his declaration of an "emergency."

Nonplussed, You might try watching cable news and you'd know where we get a lot of our info. that you will never get on the liberal stations. Bet you did not even know about ACORN until a week or two after the video's were shot. I know you did not if
you watched ABC, CBS, MSNBC, or NBC. See, they basically ignore any of the news that makes the Obama Adm. look bad. Start watching FNC and you'll understand where Plant probably gets his news.

"I'm a big supporter of non-censorship," Obama said. "I recognize that different countries have different traditions. I can tell you that in the United States, the fact that we have free Internet - or unrestricted Internet access is a source of strength, and I think should be encouraged."

I don't see any talk of censorship here. (unless you mean his support of non-censorship).

Get ready for a push for "reasonable" restrictions on the internet. It appears Obama's presumptive choice for AG will be Eric Holder, a former Clinton Justice Department official. As the corporate media throws confetti and heralds the possibility of America's first black AG, it ignores something more sinister lurking beneath the surface: in 1999, Holder advocated internet regulation. Whats your point? Last time I looked Eric Holder was AG, and I think I'm right that the AG doesn't make laws. I also haven't heard Obama say he wanted to regulate the internet, in fact he just said the opposite. Now I know there are some right wing repugs who would love to regulate the internet. The Christian right would love to get the porn and the progressive blogs. The talk about regulating the internet is not coming from the left, its coming from the right.

"A bill to ensure the continued free flow of commerce within the United States and with its global trading partners through secure cyber communications, to provide for the continued development and exploitation of the Internet and intranet communications for such purposes, to provide for the development of a cadre of information technology specialists to improve and maintain effective cybersecurity defenses against disruption, and for other purposes."

That's the cyber security act as it stands now but it has a long way to go before it's put into effect and I'm sure by then, the necessary changes will be made.

"The Secretary of Commerce- shall have access to all relevant data concerning (critical infrastructure) networks without regard to any provision of law, regulation, rule, or policy restricting such access..." This is the part that has many up in arms. We have other fed regs that control much of our daily lives and unless you're really afraid of the government you won't see the bogeyman here.

"There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment. How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. But at any rate they could plug in your wire whenever they wanted to. You had to live-did live, from habit that became instinct-in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized."

it kind of describes the whining mass of (so called) conservatives pretty well right now... doesn't it??

I can see where orwell is going with that, but it kind of assumes that the bitches that liberals have with those who are power hungry are out of jealousy.. and that may be the case with some.. others are more humanitary, sociological, philisophical..

but then, you must desire power to gain power.. some seek power with no real desire, and they get disgruntled and turn against the system when they fail.. some of them are liberals.. but you may as well say all black people are lazy.

|
4:09 pm, Nov 16, 2009
Plantagenet

Hi Phil:

Nope....George Orwell had it right and you've got it wrong.

Orwell's description of liberals as "Power worshippers" describes the whining mass of (so called) liberals pretty well right now... doesn't it??

For instance, liberals claim to support abortion rights, but when Pelosi passes a healthcare bill with a ban on federal payments for abortions its suddenly OK because Obama is in power and he applauded it and liberals worship Obama.

And...liberals claim to be against war, but now the war in Afghanistan is OK but Obama is in power and liberals worship Obama.

And....liberals claim to be against the Patriot Act, but now the Patriot Act is OK because it was Obama who wanted it re-authroized and liberals worship Obama.

And....liberals claim to be against insider deals for the big banks but now its OK for Geithner to be on the phone constantly with the big banks to help them with inside deals because Obama picked Geithner and liberals worship Obama.

etc etc.

Liberals are willing to abandon their so-called principles when Obama discards them, because liberals are power worshippers and Obama is in power.

|
5:44 pm, Nov 16, 2009
PhilMcRoin

I don't know of any liberals who are for any of the things you mentioned.. maybe some of the fence sitting reets what call themselves liberals blindly follow Obama... but just as the loud people who call themselves conservatives are really just dittohead losers and glen beck fans ...just because you voted for Obama, wear patchouli, and get mad at anyone who says Bill Mahr is an arrogant asshole, doesn't make you a liberal.. well maybe it does, but it doesn't make you informed..

and one more thing,

I guess you didn't like my Cheap Trick reference? I thought it was pretty clever.... I'm hurt.

That will include our resident "pédant" Plantagenet and 90 % of the US Congress.

The Goldstone Report written by a Zionist Jew tells the truth but Americans are blind.

Americans in general are totally ignorant about is happening in Palestine and Jews could care less.

We are responsible for our society and generation. And their is something like the internet, which is not able to control we should regulate it. The moral of the society is going down, cause there is to much brutality and violance in the web, or such kinds of pornography of children or for example computer games, which nobody really needs, whatever. The consequence of it is , that more and more teenagers become criminals or will not be able finish a good education and will not be able to become employees. Internet should be more efficient controlled and scensored.

Censorship in a free society will never last for long. You can try to shut down sources for truth but the people who are willing to search will find a way to get it and pass the information along even under the threat of imprisonment. This is not to say that we do not need to watch and question our government. Unfortunately we must now even question our printed text books, news and broadcast media. Regardless the truth is still available in some form and it will keep us free.

Do you really think that all the Chinese people believe only what the government reports? However, there is a difference between knowing the truth and being able to do something about it. Mao disarmed the Chinese population in 1938. Chinese government is no different than the US government. In the US 535 people in DC decide the direction for 300 million people. Right or wrong. In China it is probably the same for their 1.2 billion.

Over time in a free society the "Truth Will Set You Free". In a communist society tyranny will not stand forever. However, without guns it will take longer.

so you've never heard of some hot story of corruption or some strange happening reported or caught on tape and went right to your computer only to find that it was mysteriously removed?? not by the government but by the ISP, because of pressure from their parent company..

really.. it is strange that some people believe that the world is STILL run by governments.. something that hasn't been true since the 1700's..

Bottom line is he is polished, he is well spoken, and he is a man who wants to "change" America into a third world nation.

Those of you who support him blindly, remember this as just one of the days of his two faced positioning, and when the dust settles, hope there is something left of America to clean up and "change".

Your post instantly makes me think "Did you like living under the Bush administration?" I have to wonder what you think Obama has done that is so terrible that Bush didn't do worse? Bush did illegal snooping via wiretaps, had the Abu Ghraib embarrassment, started a war under false pretenses in Iraq, and on and on.

Additionally, I don't think that those who voted for Obama support him blindly. That's the kind of non-statement many like to make to discredit not only Obama but those that voted for him as though they are mindless chickens. Here's where I have to refer back to Bush: did his supporters blindly vote and follow? Are they also mindless chickens. I think when you put Obama up against Bush for systematically destroying or doing harm to this country, Bush wins hands down.

Criticizing Fox News has nothing to do with criticizing the press. Fox News is not a news organization. It is the de facto leader of the GOP, and it is long past time that it was treated as such by our nation's media.

And if you think it is only the over 55 that watch Fox... you should remember that Palin, the darling of Fox... is not 55. Either is the crazy woman from Minnesota Bauckmann. Most people under 55 have better things to do. How funny!
