Obama’s Basketball-Playing Education Secretary

Arne Duncan
Charles Rex Arbogast / AP

News has leaked out about Obama’s choice for education secretary, and it’s…another basketball player! Arne Duncan, the CEO of Chicago’s public school system, is a 6-foot-5-inch Harvard grad who played professional ball in Australia. Aside from his success on the court, he’s “managed the political hat trick of winning praise from the education reform community, the unions, and is well-liked by parents, too,” The Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder writes. Duncan is a fan of merit pay for teachers but has still won praise from the American Federation of Teachers, no small feat, and he’s won the blessing of outgoing Education Secretary Margaret Spellings.

We are undergoing lot of problem. Another area that's been hit hard by the recession is universities, as it's getting harder for students to fund college. Since trying to fund college isn't easy to begin with at state schools, private schools are a veritable nightmare - and it's leading many institutions to revise college admission policy, and with shrinking endowments there's less aid to go around. Some students are able to cope with costs with part time jobs, but if you $20,000 a semester in tuition, you'd have to work part time as a stock broker to dent the bills. Some students can still get personal loans to fund college, but it's getting harder - maybe some universities should cancel football programs - and put it towards real students.
