Palin Throttles Obama in Op-Ed
She may have resigned as governor, but nothing else has changed when it comes to Sarah Palin’s political agenda. In an op-ed for The Washington Post, Palin circumvents the national media, who “would rather focus on the personality-driven political gossip,” to rail on President Obama’s cap-and-trade energy plan, which, she writes, would “inflict permanent damage” on America. Palin writes that major job losses both in the energy sector and other industries will ensue from the plan as costs of business rise, and that America should depend on Alaska and other energy-rich states rather than foreign oil. “The answer doesn’t lie in making energy scarcer and more expensive!” Palin writes, adding that we need to “tap the resources that God created right underfoot on American soil.”

Who cares did you ask? Many of us care. It is about time somebody has the balls to stand up to this unqualified scam artist that is destroying this country. You radical idiots can call her names, file your stupid frivolous ethics complaints, but soon that crap will be stopped. Since when is Obama serious about anything but to line his pockets along with those who helped him. We are sick of this out and out stealing from American taxpayers. Now, Palin will be free to do what others have become wimpy about.
revcat
Obama is lining his pockets? Surely you jest, it's Sarah Palin who quit her job in Alaska (where she might have actually had a chance to achieve something) in order to line her pockets. Well, good for her, but it doesn't mean I have to agree with everything she says. I haven't called her any names, but according to you I'm a "radical idiot" just because I'm not on her bandwagon. She is choosing to stay in the spotlight, so she must like it.
watching
I will never believe Palin wrote this herself because she will never show up (except on Hannity coached world) to expound on her thoughts. She has lost the little credibility she may have had & thinks she can scam her way to prominence. What think tank has she ever been involved in?
aluxeterna
as opposed to the unqualified scam artist that stole from us for eight years before?
(I don't like Obama's coziness with Wall Street any more than you do, but lets not pretend that this is something new in Washington.)

OK Joanne38, please provide factual evidence that President Obama is 1. a scam artist and 2. that he is destroying the country.
The US does not need rhetoric from the right or the left, it needs solutions to problems. If we do not use rational thinking in assessing facts and implementing solutions that work, we truly will destroy our country.
gak001
Unqualified?! Are you on crack? Palin took 5 years to get a Bachelor's Degree in COMMUNICATIONS. And then she became a mayor of a city the size of a medium-sized college and governor of a state with a population that's barely over a third that of Philadelphia. Obama has his Juris Doctorate, taught Constitutional Law, served as a community organizer, worked briefly in the private sector, and served in the Illinois state legislature and the United States Senate.
How was Sarah Palin qualified to do the jobs she's already done much less be leader of the free world?
shortcourse
Unlike a few of you Palin hate spewers...I've actually watched and listened to her speak in an arena...without teleprompters...do not shortsell this woman...you only make yourself look more ignorant than the one you dispell.
djanimaequeen
Umm hello? With all of your back and forth on here did anyone realize that the US can only supply 25% of our current demand? If we were to cut off our foreign oil supply like the village idiot suggests, won't that also drive up the price?

She did not write the piece...she can not string two coherent thoughts together and up till now has no availed herself of a thesaurus--if she knows what one is...She also forgot that in the Pres primary she was for 'cap and trade' along with Mccain...She is best suited to be a female R. Limpbow --big mouth, big lies , big bucks, no accountibilty!
Khrish
I cosign that. This woman is a legend in her own mind. She can't even speak well enough to debate me so certainly she's getting in over her head, as usual, trying to pick a fight with someone she couldn't even respond to without taking time to use a thesaurus and dictionary. Why won't she listen and go get herself informed and educated.
Bunx05
I agree Khrish.
Now imagine Palin and Obama going head to head in a Presidential debate. Yeah...I'm laughing too.
Bulldoglover100
The only thing I care about is that people appear to accept that Palin actually wrote this!!! ROTFLMAO NO WAY did that moron write this! SOMEONE else had to write it and anyone who does not agree? Is the same brand of idiot. LOOK at the way she talks and then see if it fits ANY KNOWN pattern!
DeeAmbro
Yes, and my guess would be some eloquent speechwriter being paid big bucks...by the oil companies. Or Bill Kristol! I just returned from a trip to Portugal. Looking out the window as we took off, I noticed hundreds of wind turbines scattered throughout the countryside. When I got back, I researched it and learned that Portugal gets approximately 21% of its energy from wind...with a target of 40%. The socialist swedes get 40%. I think we're under 3%. This is indeed an economic issue. If we want to be left behind in the 21st century we should just follow Sarah Palin and the oil companies right over the cliff they're leading us to. Or we can bite the bullet, change, and leave our children one positive thing. It's the least we can do after defiling their planet and ruining the economy.!

Yep, someone else wrote it. Next time she might want to find a ghostwriter who has some basic knowledge of the subject matter and will throw in one or two facts. Remember week one and two of the campaign when Palin proclaimed that Alaska provided 20% of U S energy when they actually provide 3.5%. If Palin lips are moving she is lying and apparently even when someone else is moving the pen she is still lying.
sagers
You are all absolutely correct in saying that Palin did not in fact write this opinion piece. The vocabulary and style in itself when compared to every single piece of interview footage proves that her speech and this article don't match up. Also DeeAmbro is correct in his/her point that we need to develop more alternative sources of power rather than explore the current model. If he don't we'll be way below other country's outputs and back in the same energy situation we're in now.

Mrs. Palin misses the point of Cap and Trade. Its primary function is to reduce emissions. Drilling for oil anywhere won't do that.
Less dependence on foreign oil will likely just be a fortunate side effect.
Of course, Mrs. Palin doesn't believe in global warming. But I doubt she took all that many critical science courses in pursuit of her journalism degree.
mselectric
You're wrong. Gov. Palin does believe in global warming but disagrees as to whether or not it is "man made". It would be circumspect of you to research more on Gov. Palin and what she does and does not stand for. I'd suggest you leave this web site to do that. The nuances at the Daily Beast are laughable. Just look at the lead-in posted above regarding her op-ed. The words "she rails on Obama"...how about "she disagrees strongly with Obama" instead? or how about "she circumvents the national media" by going to the Wash Post? What's wrong with that? Most of our politicians and serious party leaders go to the leading papers to air their thoughts. President Obama even writes op-ed's. It's considered very mainstream to do this. My advice to all of you is to look at the language used when talking about her vs. the language used when talking about other politicians. It's chilling, it's sexist and it's wrong.
paristokyo
"Gov. Palin"? I thought she resigned!
gsuescum
What's sexist about the language? Any criticism of Palin always brings up the sexist comments from her defenders...
rapierwits
ms electric,
You dodged the main point that cap & trade is to reduce emissions. Two of the programs Palin cites (clean coal, natural gas) will be encouraged by can-and-trade because they reduce emissions.
rapierwits
also, "dodged the national media by going to the Wash(ington) Post? Huh?
davidlee
mselectric,
perhaps you should just write your own post in your own vernacular rather than instructing us all on how to write in terminology which satisfies your notion of political correctness.
mrs. palin PUT herself in the public spotlight, positioned herself as a belligerent fighter, and then plays the hurt little girl whenever she's called out on ethical impropriety or, for that manner, her ability to utilize the English language in an effective manner.
this op-ed was obviously written for her, as she's not written or uttered language that comes close to this level of complexity. the only thing that sounds like her is the "created for us by God" bit; and she always includes a reference to "God" because it appeals to the right-wing martyr-wannabes who feel themselves so oppressed becaust they're not allowed to legislate their theofascism.
i don't understand why mrs. palin and the rest of the "Christians" who seem to think Jesus is coming back next week don't just stay out of politics altogether - prepare for your future journey, and leave the governing to people not drowned in hysterical mythological delusions.
NDM1973
Palin fails to 1. identify the problem and its supposed effect and 2. offer a substantive alternative, and its supposed benefits. If she wants to be taken seriously-and this goes for any politician-she needs to learn to speak to Independents in this country in a non-BS, non-sound-bite way. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/behind-the-numbers/2009/05/pew_values_poll _independents_u.html
bonoix
I am insulted that other women consider any real discussion of Ms. Palin sexist when it talks about her in objective terms. I would talk the same way about an inarticulate, egotist who was a man. The sexism to me is that if she were ugly, she would not be receiving the accolades she has. Her success has nothing to do with what she says or does. That is sexism.

n--Y--charles116Picachu
And don't forget, Palin believes in Global Warming - because one of her handlers convinced her she should, not because she really does. Deep down inside she knows it's just a godless left wing lie.
ThinkAgain
If she's so shallow why do you spend so much time trying to convince each other what she really is and thinks? Wouldn't it go without saying? Wouldn't it be obvious? What's with the constant harping?
Joanne38
Global Warming, Cap and Trade, and Go Green are just code words to talk followers like yourself into to supporting them to tax us even more than they already are. We already have protections in place on these issues, but by calling them different names, they have an open door to tax us for them. This is BS and most of us know it. Palin hasn't missed any point, but there are a lot of you who want to shut her up and that is very obvious. How many critical science courses do you think Gore pursued to get his expert knowledge? NONE. You people are easily scammed by him and others who are backing him. Did you also believe him when he said he invented the Internet? You probably did. He is tagged as a liar and a fortune hunter and this is a way for him to make billions off of this Ponzi Scheme. A real expert's evidence was hidden by this administration because it didn't agree with their agenda. Many experts say the sun is what is causing the small amount of warming. If this Democratic government admitted that to be true, they wouldn't get by as easily to tax us. Rahrah, do you want to be taxed more? I, like many, are taxed to death and it has got to stop somewhere. We have got our own families to take care of.
zkazan
Buddy, get a fucking life. NOBODY believed Al Gore about the Internet. It was said tongue in-cheek. Sounds like another FOX sound bite. Enlarge your horizons.
btw where do you think Alaska oil goes? The lower 48? Nope, guess again. The people of Alaska don't even get the bulk of it. Talk to me about drilling in the Gulf now. Where do you think that oil's gonna be exported to?
Maezeppa
>>>How many critical science courses do you think Gore pursued to get his expert knowledge?
Al Gore had the input of the finest scientific data in the world, bar none. The jury is in. Human-caused global warming is a matter of scientific fact and all the shills paid by polluters to lie to the public doesn't change that fact.
Maezeppa
zkazan is wrong. Gore did develop the internet. If it hadn't been for Gore, the net would still be some backplane toy deep in DARPA's recesses and unavailable for public use and enjoyment.
mselectric
Yes, "Governor" Palin. She is currrently the governor of Alaska until July 26th and even when she does resign she will always retain the title as a courtesy. It's done this way. Speaker Gingrich, President Carter, etc..
Regarding VP Al Gore - yes, is absolutely tapped to make hundreds of millions off of Cap & Trade due to his investments in the companies that will most benefit from this. His personal worth when he left office was about 5 million, now he's already worth about 200 million and that's not from speaking fees my friends. Money and power is what it's always about.
gsuescum
Cap and trade worked very well to reduce acid rain in the Northeast and Canada. All the companies involved in the cap and trade of those emissions are working more efficiently and still around making more money than they did before. Cap and trade is all about using market forces. Since when do conservative consider market forces a bad thing?
Centrist
To be a little more accurate, Gore did not "invent" the internet nor did he "develop" the internet or claim to have done either. He did say, accurately, that he was "responsible" for the internet. As a young Senator he recognized the possiblities inherent in the internet precursor ARPA and fought for the legislation to fund development of those technologies which became the internet as we now know it. The nation owes him a debt of graditude for his prescience.
Bmaccc
Really? You're taxed to death? How can you possibly afford internet access with such a terminal situation.
Your lack of knowledge is showing. How can you deny that our over polluting is affecting the planet? You also claim (with no factual basis) that Al Gore has not experienced "science courses for expert knowledge". Perhaps you should read his book Earth in the Balance which I read in the early 90s. If you are educated enough to understand it, you might find saving the environment is more important than a little money - for your children.

Palin take on Obama?
Do you remember the video of Obama swatting the fly. . . .
Ozone69
Apparently it's OK for us to pay OPEC for oil but not to drill in Alaska for more oil? The Trans Alaskan Pipeline has supplied over 15 billion barrels of oil. (BTW, Joe Biden was one of 5 senators to vote against the pipeline in 1973). Rather than fill the coffers of the Saudis and ugo Chavez, maybe we could tap into our own oil supply.
skorpeo
we can't shut off the oil dependence immediately, but maybe we could start focusing on a cleaner energy source and begin getting away from oil altogether. just a thought. this is what killed the american auto industry, the inability/lack of motivation to explore other options rather than oil.
JohnnyAces
WE NEED IT ALL. No doubt we should definitely transition a portion of our energy consumption to alternatives such as wind, solar, geo-thermal etc. But, this will take a decade or more to fully implement. In the meatime, we need to produce more of our own fossil fuel to wean ourselves off of foreign resources, to get us closer to an alternative reality, and to avoid a sudden shock of higher energy prices. Plus, don't forget, you can't build a new energy infrastructure without oil and other natural resources.
Picachu
Yes, it kind of makes you wonder why that hasn't happened since you repubs have controlled congress since 1994 and had 12 years of Bush whitehouse in roughly the same span. Hmmm, could it be that the Bushies weren't such great patriots, and they were enhancing their personal fortunes through their close relationship with the House of Saud?
Ozone69
Clinton and Gore were in the WH for 8 years. What was their contribution to alternative energy sources?

The point is to reduce the use of oil not drill for it here. The point is to develop renewable energy sources and clean up the polution in the air and water.

Well, I'll say this about Palin...
When she does something, she doesn't half-ass it.
She put the 'Palin Plane' in a steep dive by quitting her last job, and now, with this rather comical attempt at solemnity, she's gunning the engines towards the groud. I'm thinking the crash is going to very memorable.
Joanne38
Heck no she didn't because she has just begun. Get ready because you Obama protectors are in for a tough fight and we are right behind her. Even Soros, Buffet, and Powell are backing off. If you hadn't noticed already, our country isn't doing so great, thanks to your almighty Messiah.
JDK-JDK
MY almighty Messiah?
Joanne... get a clue before posting. But what should I expect. ANYONE, be they GOP or Dem, who adheres strictly to THEIR way is undoubtedly wrong on most accounts.
Palin is a joke and only a few hardliners are still clinging to her. Why is she getting press right now? Because most people turn their heads to look at the scene of an accident and the press generally picks up on what people want.
revcat
Hey, the south rose again and so will the Republican party, but not until you find some real leaders, smart people with real vision. Using god as your co-pilot isn't workin' out because the real God isn't merchandise used to sell a product.
gbernier
Joanne, get a grip.
I took the Bush-Cheney regime 8 years to FUBAR the economy. It is a bit unrealistic to think anybody can fix it in less than 6 months. What's more no one said they could.
You're obviously a true believer in conservatism. Only blind faith can overcome facts and logic. Here's a fact that Republicans don't like to talk about. There was no net growth in the 12 years of Reagan and Bush the Elder. During Reagan's 8 years GDP increased 1.6 trillion dollars, but the national debt also increased 1.6 trillion dollars. All the that great growth that Republicans talk about that Ronnie created with his tax cuts was put on the national credit card. The 4 years of Bush the Elder were just about as bad.
There was real net growth under Clinton and then Bush the Younger pissed it all away. Now Obama has to clear away the wreckage and start again.

sippewissett
It's actually pretty funny that Palin IS obliquely supporting the oil companies because she fought them tooth and nail while in office. This so-called Op-Ed is all about positioning herself as an energy expert (i.e., Drill, baby, drill.)
In fact, a key reason her gas line to nowhere stalled is that Palin wanted to circumvent the oil companie (her source of natural gas) so she gave a $500MM contract to a pipeline-building company that had no access to gas. Then she discovered that she had to 'make nice' with the oil companies she had been snubbing. There's still no progress on that project. Read about it best in Joe McGinniss' article in Portfolio: http://www.portfolio.com/executives/features/2009/03/17/Governor-Palins-Big -Energy-Battles

And you are a bigger fool if you are depending on Palin making a difference. She can't even hold down a 4 year job that Alaskan citizens voted her into do. She can't keep a promise that she made these people through her oath as governor...how the devil do you expect this attention deficent nutcase to make anything better for anyone except herself. she wants some money, she wants her life to be better.....she doesn't care about you as she didn't care about McCain when she was his VP nominee. Wake up!
xlntcat
She didn't sit on that enery panel for even a year before she quit. It is amazing that those few months qualified her to claim that she knew more about energy than anyone in the U S.
sippewissett
So if one follows the 'logic' of your argument, there is ONLY drilling for oil or the end of the world as we know it?? Funny that many other countries are opting for a combination of drilling (if they have natural resources), solar, wind and nuclear and they are all still on this planet without dire consequences. You don't "get" that we have been leading a charmed life using more than our share of resources at low prices. Those days are OVER.
As for climate change, you don't have to believe it. Maybe you are the guy in LA who is fighting Republicans who voted for a new energy direction and believes in Bigfoot.
donquijoterocket
You got any kind of evidence to back up your wild speculations there? Or should I,seeing you're obviously a first class wingnut, know better than to ask. What's "new" about any petroleum source the only "new" is which chunk of the earth we're tearing up to get at it."new to me is like nanosolar technology or binary geothermal. If Sarah Palin actually wrote this then my BS detector is badly broken. I wonder how many saved draft copies of this are on Bill Kristol's laptop.
Do they really think that we're that stupid? It's true that some people are better writers than speakers, but to go from scatter-brained incoherence in oral presentation to a reasonably well-presented, albeit wrong, essay like this highly unlikely.
I think we could put Palin in a room full of dictionaries and thesauri for a hundred years and never see the sentences:
"Particularly in Alaska, we understand the inherent link between energy and prosperity, energy and opportunity, and energy and security. Consequently, many of us in this huge, energy-rich state recognize that the president's cap-and-trade energy tax would adversely affect every aspect of the U.S. economy."
There's just no way in hell.
joefrat
you're such a chump - get off your high horse.
mclaubr1
Come on. Palin-speak or word-salad is not evident in this piece. I agree that Bill Kristol and others will attempt to reintroduce her to the Lower 48 by placing these op-eds with her name attached. What would be more telling would be an interview to discuss this article. Then the "Real Sarah" will be exposed.

I'm pretty sure she wrote it, notice the verb "progressing" - that's one of her trademarks and as far as I know she invented this coinage.
binkis
Point well made .Kristol and /or Todd wrote this peice..Her vocabulary is limited to cutsie retorts which she is fast approaching being to old to deliver! She is quitter--big mouth no follow through!
sippewissett
Touche. I thought it was Rove, but her champion Kristol could well have been the source. I love the part she quoted about her state, the same state that can't wait to see her gone. Everyone reading this thread should read the sentiments of AK residents who feel abandoned and betrayed by her quitting. And, as other articles have made clear, her reasons for quitting are unraveling (including the purported costs of fighting ethics complaints). Check out www.adn.com to see what I mean.
Palin cannot 'write' her way out of the mess she created. Regrettably she now resembles a slug that leaves a slime trail behind it. If she is the best the GOP has to offer, they are doomed. Worst of all the GOP is content to use her right now because alternative leadership has fallen by the scandal-ridden wayside.
Where the heck are good thinkers like Wm Buckley? Without vision, the GOP is doomed to its regional, white-only, aging base that loves Palin and dooms the party in future elections.

Breaking now: Levi leaked Sarah's original first draft. Here's the portion I've been able to obtain:
"In Alaska, also, particularly many of us in this huge also energy-rich state understand cap-and-trade would tax security and forget about energy also U.S. economy. Do I have to call that man president I can't he is bad man bad Ivy League man speaks too good makes me feel inade, inade, inadeqwhat also cap-and-trade is what again? In the true America they know and they're mad as heck you betcha. You media people and you people that read this media are not so smart also."
PatriceFitz
That is hilarious!
What's funny is that some people just want to defend her when she speaks that way -- they say they can understand it. Well, I guess I can understand what's she's trying to say, if I think about it real hard, but the inability to speak in clear sentences makes me fear that her mind is as jumbled as her syntax. So how can she THINK logically?
I wish the poor woman would just take a rest, already. Take a month off and hang with the family. But you know she can't resist the spotlight, now that she's had it.
"How ya gonna keep 'em down on the farm, after they've seen Paree?"

PinkoLefty - "I wonder how many saved draft copies of this are on Bill Kristol's laptop."

I feel wishy washy today, so I'm going to agree with all of you. We should be drilling in the USA - EVERYWHERE and NOW! GOD should be kept out of all of this. Unless Sarah nows something on the inside skinny. She may actually know him, if I were GOD I would also live in Alaska.
xlntcat
I don't know if she know God or not, but she does know a witch doctor who will purge you of witchcraft, if you find the need. He has also been known to drive witches out of communities if you have that problem.
joefrat
Say what you want about Sarah Palin, she's right about this cap and trade bill. This won't just affect the oil companies. This bill will have severe repercussions on all US companies, who will eventually pass their higher prices right on to the consumer. Climate change is an important topic, but does anyone think for a second India or China will follow our lead? All that will be accomplished by this bill is making US companies less competitive in the global economy and less likely to hire American workers.
allonfla
The Real America don't wait for other countries to do anything. Although for many years we have been sitting on our hands while other countries surpass us in industries that we should be leading in. Why don't we make the best cars and electronics?
The Real America, if Repubs were using that term genuinely, don't sit around and follow other countries. We should be setting the example for how we treat our people, our women, how we conduct business, and our innovation.
joefrat
allonfla - I agreee with you that America shouldn't wait for other countries to determine our strategy. If we did, the world would be stuck with Saddam Hussein today. Some people would rather have him, I understand that. But this cap and trade bill will hurt the American people at a time when we least need it. This bill further handcuffs US companies' ability to provide jobs for the American people and passes along a indirect tax on the consumer of US made goods and services.

allonfla,
No, the "Real America Don't [sic] wait for other countries to do anything." At least for the past eight years, the "intelligence" invented by W was nothing more than a way of justifying the invasion of another sovereign nation to spread his notion of "freedom."
And let's not forget that Osama bin-Laden, the man who should have been the only "terrorist" on his list, appears to still be a free man.
I also agree that we "should be setting the example for how we treat our people, our women, how we conduct business, and our innovation." However, when those who carried out torture against war prisoners (which initially was categorically denied) will seemingly go unpunished, the example we have set is one of simply being a rogue nation who rewrites laws (including those found in our own Constitution) simply for political and financial gain.

Agreed. Is there anyone else besides me that thinks Gov. Palin is lining up for a job in the energy sector as a new full time occupation? It seems to me she is addressing the policy from the administration, not attacking the president.
There is a HUGE differance.

No you are the only one. She's been claiming to be an energy expert since the election. This is the only area that appears to have credibility because she is from Alaska. Therefore it is an attempt to gain credibility - period. Until this woman comes up with original ideas and solutions to a problem and not just offering opposing talking points - she gains no credibility from me.

You are right. There is no way she could write that well. Of course, there is no way that Mr O could SPEAK that well without a teleprompter.

That's right neither Obama or Palin are from the generation that didn't adapt to 21st century technology. Rush on the other hand is an old, obese, drug addicted felon who cowardly sat out the Viet Nam war. What a hero!

The teleprompter BS is old and stale. Obama has more than proved that he can thoughtful, articulately and accurately respond to any question thrown at him. And for the record, McCain couldn't even read a teleprompter and Palin just doesn't read. No president has ever given an important speech that wasn't written or that he didn't read. Bush couldn't even give an important speech. The fact that Obama is more technology adept than prior presidents isn't a negative.
Thank you.
