Palin Giving Run 'Serious Consideration'

Sarah Palin
Chris Miller / AP Photo

Sarah Palin's surprising decision to resign as Alaska governor--which she announced in a rambling speech without notes in front of her Wasilla home on Friday--leaves her future up in the air, with some suggesting she's killed any national ambitions, intentionally or not. But Politico's Mike Allen reported Friday night that Palin "plans to remain extremely visible and will give serious consideration to running for president in 2012." Friends explained that she intends to finish her book, promote said book in the "lower 48," give paid speeches, fundraise for the GOP, spend time with her family, and gauge public opinion for a possible national run. Palin reportedly believes the resignation was selfless. As she said in her speech: "Once I decided not to run for re-election, I also felt that to embrace the conventional Lame Duck status in this particular climate would just be another dose of politics as usual, something I campaigned against and will always oppose."

I tend to disagree with Mr Allen.
She quit with a year and a half left.
This is like mark Sanford's "hiking trip" but much, much longer

She's done as an office holder, but her fund-raising career is just beginning.

For Palin to leave before the end of her term without explanation to her constituency is extremely self-serving, no matter how she tries to spin it.

Palin is an extremely ambitious person. I can appreciate that quality (although I don't respect many of her methods). And if her goal is to run for office at the national level, that is her right.

However, if her reasons for resigning are to prepare for a 2010 campaign run for Senate, then she should have the courage of her convictions and respect for her constituency and say so. To avoid explaining her reasons is sheer selfishness and cowardice.

Bottom line: nobody likes a quitter.

"... the conventional Lame Duck status in this particular climate would just be another dose of politics as usual, something I campaigned against and will always oppose."
So, would Sarah think that any elected official with 2 1/2 years left is a Lame Duck, and that's a dose of politics she will never support? Should all elected officials quit once they too are Lame Ducks? The people of Alaska will now get someone they didn't vote for; that may not be a bad thing. Would Sarah want to run for office again only to know that she would, again, be a Lame Duck and would have to again quit before her term was over?

This is about an federal ethics investigation, or one of several.
Specifically, it appears there was more than on instance of impropriety with respect to the construction of their lakefront vacay home up there in Alaska there.
Seems when they contracted their very close family friend to supply building materials for the Wasilla Sports Complex, they may have been returning a favor in exchange for finacial consideration.

Raw Story: "Many political observers in Alaska are fixated on rumors that federal investigators have been seizing paperwork from SBS in recent months, searching for evidence that Palin and her husband Todd steered lucrative contracts to the well-connected company in exchange for gifts like the construction of their home on pristine Lake Lucille in 2002. The home was built just two months before Palin began campaigning for governor, a job which would have provided her enhanced power to grant building contracts in the wide-open state. ..."

C'mon, Palin wouldn't quit her cushy gig where she wields power that enables her to strike at her political foes and get free stuff.
That's what she is all about.

No Ted Stevens 'errors' this time. DoJ will do this one right, to be sure.

Andrea Mitchell on Palin--

"She has had it and [is] out of politics."
"She is fed up with politics, she doesn't like her life, she needs to raise her family."
"She really does not want to run for higher office."
"She has told some of her biggest backers in the national Republican party that they are free to chose other candidates for 2012."

Those stupid left wing wackos who filed all those dumb ethics complaints just did us all a big favour... they convinced Palin that staying in Alaska (you know, that state way out there in another time zone) for another two years was not a smart thing to do...
what was smart was to resign and go to work for the GOP in the lower 48 and get Republicans elected to Congress in 2010 and regain control and go out and raise a ton of money for the GOP and herself and kick that dolt Obama and his idiot friends out of government and then try to repair all the damage they have done in so short a time...
this is great news...

If her objective was a 2012 run for POTUS, she would have been better off finishing her term as governor and simply announcing that she would not re-run for office. To quit after 2 1/2 years in her first term as governor suggests a person who cannot multitask, handle the pressures that come with the job (working with the legislature, dealing with the press, etc), and someone who is more interesting in being in the spotlight and waving to the crowds than she is in being a serious political force.

Plantagenet,

If Obama benefitted from affirmative action so did Sarah Palin. She is a woman you dolt which makes her a minority that benefitted from affirmative action. What about George W. Bush who benefitted from legacy who got into his ivy league school and let's not forget White privilege that both Palin and Bush are afforded everyday. As for Obama's test scores, do you have such test scores or did you make this up all by yourself? I love how you White people will throw out affirmative action at every turn but you never talk about legacy and White privilege. All Palin has shown is she is nothing more than a quitter and we can't have that for president.

That nonsense about Obama only getting into because of affirmative action Harvard is blatantly racist. As other have point out there is not a shred of evidence that that was the case. Further, one may speculate, if it were true it would prove the value of affirmative action which considers factors other than test scores alone. What is a matter of public record is that Obama graduated magna cum laude from Harvard. Looks like Harvard made a good choice. There is no quota for academic honors.

Just came across a missing page (I think one of the geese nabbed it) from her rambling, disjointed speech today:

As we prepare to celebrate our country's independence, Sarah Palin wishes to take this opportunity to express her great appreciation for being so blessed to be thankful for this great nation of ours....that she appreciates....and is thankful for...which makes her so blessed....to be able to appreciate our great nation...of ours...of which she is a part...of.

She also wishes to express how blessed she is to live in the great state of Alaska. After all, anyone can pet a moose, but only a true Alaskan can reduce it to a large pot of moose chili.

She is also so appreciative of all those who appreciate her family, including Trapp, Trog, Peter-Piper, Truck, Barstool, and Wallow, as well as future babies Tinsel, Teflon, and Tallow.

I think you may be about right. I don't know about the president thing, I think she knows she's in over her head there but there are cabinet positions and many places she might fit in if she proves herself a good republican. That is really what this is all about, rising above the fray of politics to stay in it clean. Easier to be selected than elected. Follower and not a leader. I am not wild about her or Huckabee and I am not wild that they lose elections and then work for Fox. That seems to be the pathway for the GOP at this time. Whole new machine for them and not a good one I think.

You are absolutely right, Granite. Having a high IQ isn't everything......a person also have to be able to work hard, and President Obama has shown a great ability to be disciplined, work hard, and achieve personal success through his distinguished career. What Obama hasn't done is to actually accomplish very much other then his own personal successes---Obama's community organising in Chicago seems to have done almost nothing for poor people in Chicago but it did launch Obama's political career. His time in the Illinois legislature found Obama mainly ducking controversies by voting "present" on the tough issues. Obama endorsed Blagovich for governor and never broke with him until the corruption became so putrid that Blagovich was indicted. Obama accomplished nothing in the Senate, but did promote himself by giving great speeches. Now that Obama is president he has accomplished nothing except allowing the democratic Congress to explode the deficit by signing off on 2 trillion dollars of deficit spending in his first five months in office.

Watching AC360 was too funny tonight. After the clip of Palin's speech and her rambling on about a "basketball game" - Anderson Cooper was talking to one of her supporters and he was being dead serious - he said "No, I don't know anything about basketball - I only understand politics." later on he said "No, I really don't get it - what ball? and who's it being passed to?" My feelings exactly. Palin's speech was painful to listen to, she acted like she was on speed.
