Phelps Suspended by Team
Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps is in the deep end after being photographed with a bong. The 23-year-old was suspended from competitions for three months by the USA Swimming team late Thursday. He will receive no compensation from the league during that time. "We decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero," the national governing body said in a statement. In the wake of the scandal, Phelps was also dropped as a spokesperson for Kellogg and it's now unclear if he'll participate in the 2012 London Summer Games. "If I decide to walk away, I'll decide to walk away on my own terms," he said in a newspaper interview. "If it's now, if it's four years, who knows."

Michael Phelps has not disappointed anyone with a brain. No one (with a brain) admired him for his impeccable ethical standards or high esteem fro the rule of law. We bow down to him when he does the freestyle and brings home shiny gold objects on behalf of the good old US of A. So unless he recently failed at some swimming competition, I am not disappointed.
Pot. Who cares?
Oh give the guy a break.
If Phelps is not consistent with Kellogg's image, then Kellogg's image is not consistent with mine. Guess I'm eating Post cereals from now on. I don't purchase products from knee-jerk puritanical companies.
Oh for the love of Pete. The reaction to this is so Bush Administration. Some of us have moved on from these crap culture war non-issues.
this is absolutely ridiculous. who cares if he smoked pot? the guy is an amazing world breaking fantastic athlete. thats why we love him.
honestly, you would think he was caught doing some sort of heinous crime..
Ridiculous over-reaction. Just ridiculous. Fools!
Reefer Madness is alive and well. I guarantee the bong hits that Phelps took did far less damage that the over processed sugary crap that Kellogg feeds the fat asses of America.
Around here that's like getting a parking ticket. Can you fire someone for getting a parking ticket?
From the time our kids can understand TV they are conditioned to beleive that when they can legally or illegally start drinking beer, the real party starts. They will be sex gods and godesses, downing a few beers with their equally attractive and totally hip friends, on the beaches of Southern California. And ,ironically, the majority of these ads are sponsoring sporting events, including the Olympics. Then another year goes by with ten's of thousands of alcohol and tobacco related deaths---but none for marijuana. So what happens when Michael smokes some pot. He's shamed in front of the world. Perhaps we should take away his gold medals.
Kellogs---they crack me up. They would drop somebody for masturbating. Funny that nothing would have happened to Phelps if he had downed half a bottle of vodka, vomited, and passed out after groping some women. For all the disappointed people, have a look at yourselves and get a life.

If anyone deserves a good bong hit, it's this guy. Only morons that didn't go to college (or went to Bob Jones) would even mention this 'atrocity'; the media is so quick to turn their backs! And no more Kellog's cereal for me, either.
I'm suspending my interest in the team and this story. I couldn't care less if Phelps or anybody else who smokes some pot.
Greengirl: Thanks for saying about that idiot what a lot of us are thinking.
I'm chuckling while thinking about those commercials, you know the ones I speak of. Where they accuse pot smokers of being lazy losers with miserable lives. Well, I'd like to see NORML put out some new ones showing that myth exposed. I myself partake, and yet at the same time, I've held down a good job for the last fifteen years and I'm raising three kids. Great to see that the over-stereotyped toker group just picked up a grade A class athelete. "What do pot smokers do?" Claim Gold Medals Beeeyatch!!!! HAHAHAHA!!! It's to bad he can't defend his actions honestly, and stick up for us. But I understand why.

Seriously? Whomever is running the USA Swimming team should be drug out and shot. Idiots. Who cares? Michael Phelps is the best thing that has happened to the USA swim team since I don't know, ever?
While I don't use drugs, or condone the use of them, if Michael Phelps in wants to take a puff of something that is practically legal in some states the who cares.
I say, Michael, with all the medals you've won... take them somewhere else. Go compete for a another country who will allow you to be whomever you wish to be.
There are always a million companies who I am sure will gladly pick you up as a sponsor. One companies loss is anothers gain.
Morals. LMAO. I wonder if Lehman Brothers kept to the same Moral code Kellogs is.
I think this guy has to be considered the greatest living athlete. His accomplishments are amazing. With those accomplishments came wealth and fame. With fame came his opportunity, indeed the unchangeable certainty, that he'd serve as a role model.
With his honking at a bong came proof that he is unworthy of his fame, status and, as far as role modeling goes, is an encourager for admirers to harm themselves and others.
I hope he's indicted and arrested. I hope the prosecutor drags his trial out for two years, so that by the end of the process he'll have no endorsement income. That income came to him because his accomplishments made him worthy of respect and attention. His behaviors shows he is unfit for any of those advantages.
Indict him and drag it out to teach all those commercial interests that still hope to profit from his public stature that association with him is association with a dope consuming criminal.
Contact Kellogg's and tell them they're making a mistake -

When are we as a people going to speak out against these Draconian, misguided drug laws that are filling our prisons, ruining countless lives. When laws are unfair they should be repealed. In other times intelligent people realized this and gave women the vote, allowed black americans to vote. abolished segregation..Repealed prohibition. Admitted that nicotine in cigarettes was addictive. I really do not get what is SO bad about Cannabis. Michael Phelps could have siezed this opportunity to be a Champion for Marijuana Reform. He is the quintessential proof that all pot smokers are not lazy or criminally inclined as Government propoganda persists. In spite of scientific evidence. It is obscene that a harmless plant should be demonized and yet tobacco and its clearly addictive ingredient nicotine is allowed to hook thousands and condemn them to a slow and lingering death.
Who can be surprised that a company whose first cereal was meant to repress sexual urges would over-react so severely.
Thanks MetryJen, I will certainly write at once. In addition I will not be buying any more Kellog products.
Thank you.
