IRAN CRACKDOWN

Police Attack Neda's Mourners

Despite having acknowledged fraud in the vote tallies in 50 cities, Iranian authorities are following through on Ayatollah Khamenei's pledge to not tolerate further protests. According to the Lede, an aggressive crackdown on what appeared to be only a small gathering was actually an assault on a memorial service for Neda, the fatally shot woman who has become an icon among protesters. The Associated Press reports that the roughly 200 to 300 protesters that gathered were met with an overwhelming police presence, including helicopters. The police resorted to tear gas and fired shots in the air while separating those walking in pairs. The Associated Press also reports that the story of Neda's tragic end is spreading like wildfire among Iranians in spite of the government's best efforts to censor it. Neda's family has said that she was caught in traffic amidst the turmoil and stepped out of her car to cool off because of the heat when she was shot by the Basij militia.

Good chance Iran will end up in a bitter multi-sided very bloody African tribal style civil war.

Yeah! Not to the tribal civil war but the fact they are putting together a block of the Ayatollah and Ah...jad! Geez, I hope no civil war! Messy for Iran and Iraq and Islam and all of that!

I think that most of the Arab/Sunni Muslim world would like to see strife in Iran and will sit on the sidelines and enjoy the show. IMO, I doubt that the Iraqi Shia would get involved, but it would be payback if arms/IED's were routed from Iraq to Iran for a change.

I read something today about those terrorists America supports. Remember, how America backs terrorists? Over 200 Congresscritters, including John Ashcroft and Joe Biden rallied behind the MEK, the Mujahedin-e-Khalq. They are terrorists, and have killed the Vice President of Iran and at least one member of their Supreme Court. See, America likes terrorists... when they attack our enemies. Aren't we just a wonderful bunch of hypocrites?

Anyway, there is tension between Iraq and Iran because these terrorists, with U.S. sanction, are disarmed but together and living inside Iraq peacefully.

You know, sort of like that guy who blew up a jet plane lives free and peacefully in America. You know, Orlando Bosch. See, although he blew up a jet plane, it was a Cuban plane! Haw, haw, jokes on those rascally Cubans! We don't like terrorists (wink, wink!)

So, in other words, with Saddam Hussein and America's help, the MEK terrorist organization has been moving weapons into Iran for a long time, and you just sound uninformed when you suggest it might start happening soon.

Iranian authorities have not acknowledged fraud. There are plausible alternative explanations for why more votes were cast in these cities -- voters don't have to vote in their home district. I enjoy this site and appreciate it's brevity, but that's a serious error of fact.

Its a crime/sin to take away someone's life, no respect for human beings at all.

It seems like a tactically smart move to take away a tactic that helped put them in power in '79.
It seems like a strategic blunder as they violate citizens' rights to practice Islam...

Islam is whatever the Ayatollahs say it is. It used to be considered a great sin for Moslems to commit suicide. The Ayatollahs reversed the ancient prohibition on suicide and instead have created a cult that glorifies suicide bombers as holy martyrs.

fair point, I believe the wahabbist justification for that lies in the greater good of carrying out a righteous struggle...
I reckon the mullahs would be hard-pressed to issue a genuine, legitimate fatwah justifying restriction of a religious practice. I do not think that the preservation of the state could be used in a widely accepted fatwah...
They're gonna do what they're gonna do to stay in power, you're right plantagenet, I'm just curious if it's gonna backfire...

I agree with both of you but isn't wahabbism Sunni and not Shia? Thats the brand of religion shipped to Pakistan and Afghanistan from the Suadis', OBL style Islam. It must be a tenet that brings together radical Sunni and Shia fighters. Really twisted.

The randomness of her killing and the other killings is a key part of the terror that the government is using. The fact that the Islamic militia will kill people randomly at demonstrations scares demonstrators and spectators alike off the streets.
