Pope to Meet Anglican Leader
Pope Benedict XVI will try to smooth things over with Anglican leader Rowan Williams after a combative speech by Williams in response to efforts by the Catholic Church to absorb disaffected Anglicans. In October, the Vatican announced a new process by which Anglican churches could become Catholic and recognize the pope as their leader while still maintaining Anglican rituals, a move that was seen as a bullying power play by some in the Anglican community. While the two churches have much in common, Anglican priests can marry and have children and women can be ordained as priests.

this is a landgrab as well as a soulgrab - the Vatican knows many of these congregations come with valuable real estate attached: and a slap in the face; and a slap in the face to Anglicans, as well as Catholic Traditionalists who should be up-in-arms as this supposedly traditional pope makes room for "heretical" beliefs and behaviors just to boost the Vatican's income.

You don't know much about church polity or theology, do you? The Episcopal and Catholic churches are already close enough that they can each take communion at the other church. Also, the Episcopal diocese owns the real estate, so the churches won't be taking anything with them except their people. The legal issue has been decided in favor of the central church over the diocese in previous cases and is unlikely to change.

Asianleon, I am pretty sure that Episcopalians and Catholics cannot take communion in each other's churches. The Episcopal church invites all baptized Christians to the communion rail but the Catholic church does not allow Catholics to do that. The Catholic church only allows Catholics to take communion in its churches. Of course no one is going to tackle you at the altar rail because you don't have to show I.D. in church!

As a Lutheran who was raised a Catholic, I applaud the efforts to bridge the Catholic and Anglican faiths. I think of it not as a "soulgrab" (but I like that description!), but rather as a long-overdue attempt to mend fences.

The ownership of Church of England property is complicated but in most cases the congregations, per se, don't have title to the property, often it is held further up the line by a bishop.

Why not recognize the vacuous stupidity for what it is and leave both organizations to twist in the wind? Where does it state, in either religion, that you need to support their un-Christian, petty behavior and incorporate it into your own lives? If God is everywhere, and if we're all supposed to be God's children, why give either of these institutions the power to tell you what is what, when they both clearly seem to have missed the underlying message? Tradition? Arbitrary foolishness, to be sure. Stand up for yourselves and tell them both to pound sand.

"... "La Vista Report" of May 15, 1947, a top-secret U.S. Army Intelligence report documenting the Vatican's role in aiding the escape of numerous high-ranking Nazi war criminals, among them Ante Pavelic, fascist leader of wartime Croatia; Franz Stangel, Commander of Treblinka; Eduard Roschmann, "the Butcher of Riga"; Klaus Barbie, "the Butcher of Lyon"; SS General Walter Rauff, inventor of the mobile gas truck; Adolf Eichmann, "architect of the Holocaust"; and tens of thousands of others. Writing about the document prior to its release, internationally renowned Nazi hunter Charles R. Allen Jr. noted that in light of the revelations contained in this and other classified documents about the role of the Vatican in the Holocaust it would be logical and proper that a commission of inquiry into these concerns including Jewish and Catholic scholars ought to be established to locate and examine all documentation in all relevant archives so that collectively they may determine what role both the Vatican and US Intelligence played in aiding and abetting the escape of some of history's most notorious murderers."

"The origins of the first ratlines are connected to various developments in Vatican-Argentine relations before and during World War II.[2] As early as 1942, Monsignor Luigi Maglione contacted Ambassador Llobet, inquiring as to the "willingness of the government of the Argentine Republic to apply its immigration law generously, in order to encourage at the opportune moment European Catholic immigrants to seek the necessary land and capital in our country".[3] Afterwards, a German priest, Anton Weber, the head of the Rome-based Society of Saint Raphael, traveled to Portugal, continuing to Argentina, to lay the groundwork for future Catholic immigration.[3] According to historian Michael Phayer, "this was the innocent origin of what would become the Vatican ratline".[3]"

The ideology of the movement was blend of fascism,[1] nazism,[2] Croatian ultranationalism, and Roman Catholic Clericalist Fundamentalism.[3] "

"During the Second World War in Yugoslavia, Catholic priests and Muslim clerics were willing accomplices in the genocide of the nations Serbian, Jewish and Roma population. From 1941 until 1945, the Nazi-installed regime of Ante Pavelic in Croatia carried out some of the most horrific crimes of the Holocaust (known as the Porajmos by the Roma), killing over 800,000 Yugoslav citizens - 750,000 Serbs, 60,000 Jews and 26,000 Roma. In these crimes, the Croatian Ustasha and Muslim fundamentalists were openly supported by the Vatican, the Archbishop of Zagreb Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac (1898-1960), and the Palestinian Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Hajj Amin al-Husseini. Many of the victims of the Pavelic regime in Croatia were killed in the war's third largest death camp - Jasenovac, where over 200,000 people - mainly Orthodox Serbs met their deaths. Some 240,000 were "rebaptized" into the Catholic faith by fundamentalist Clerics in "the Catholic Kingdom of Croatia" as part of the policy to "kill a third, deport a third, convert a third" of Yugoslavia's Serbs, Jews and Roma in wartime Bosnia and Croatia (The Yugoslav Auschwitz and the Vatican, Vladimar Dedijer, Anriman-Verlag, Freiburg, Germany, 1988)."

Quote: "While the two churches have much in common ..." maybe but significant differences exist over divorce and birth control.
Also many more Catholic preachers have abused children than Anglicans even have whether measured by percentage or straight count.
Sprightly
Remember, not one Nazi Catholic (including Hitler himself) was ever excommunicated.

The Popes continued refusal to lift the celibacy rule for current ordained priests plus his refusal to allow women to become priests has left the Church in a precarious situation. The Church has an aging population of priests & seminaries that are devoid of young applicants due to the pedophile stigma. Reaching out to married Anglican priests wasn't a land grab, it was a personnel grab.
Thank you.
