Powell Faults Obama's Agenda
Colin Powell played an important role endorsing President Obama before the election--so what does he think of the commander in chief now? "I'm a little concerned," the former secretary of State told CNN in an interview airing Sunday. "I'm concerned at the number of programs that are being presented, the bills associated with these programs and the additional government that will be needed to execute them." Specifically, there's too much to do and not enough money to pay for it. "I think one of the cautions that has to be given to the president—and I've talked to some of his people about this—is that you can't have so many things on the table that you can't absorb it all. And we can't pay for it all," he added.

"is that you can't have so many things on the table that you can't absorb it all".......that's true, only if your stupid.
I would expect a "constitutional scholar" to be able to handle it.
So far Obama has exploded the annual deficit to 2 trillion dollars---four times higher then any previous deficit---- while simultaneously increasing US unemployment to 9.6% percent. Perhaps General Powell is right that President Obama should focus a bit more on the most important things like the economy.
did you just blame the president for increasing unemployment?
Government's been hiring! It's the private sector (outside of healthcare and education) that has been laying off people.
rapierwits, its the private sector that needs help, credit lines, help with their foreclosed homes jobs, money for schools,The Government is doing fine.the people are strangled. The banks, and corporations with friends in high places are great.and we have Czars, whats up with that so many czars??Doesnt anyone think we have too many politicians, and too much goernment. i am a supporter of Obama,so dont attack me. But alot of promises are broken. I also know no one can fix what was left to us,overnight. But I see alot of lobbyist, corporation bankers, etc just growing.

I don't usually respond
To most of your posts but
This one is so dishonest that
I have to call you out on it.
With everything that was blowing up
As Bush was walking out the door-
How do you get the absolute cojones to try
And pin the deficit which now runs the wars on the books
For the FIRST TIME and the unemployment numbers
On the new President.
Did you just wake up after sleeping
For ten years?

Ritarita,I think you told me big ships turn slowly. The nose of the ship needs to tilt to the people working people ,sending children to school, jobs, growth. We just returned from visiting someone whose credits lines were shut down, how can he buy the car,American ofcourse, refinance, now he has bad credit, unemployed 13 people and he had a heart attack from the pain of unemploying his employees.Im on board, but What about taxes for those making under 250,000.??No lobbyist??I know he cannot fix eerything overnight and the former administration destroyed us,but he needs to see how the people, masses middle class, start to receive relief. What he promised there are many 180% starting to appear. Also Collin powell is stating what alot of people are concerned with. Its like too many things, is anybody reading anything before they pass it??Or no one cares, its time for us to be in power.tranparency?

Well, he is a conservative, after all.
In the same interview, however, he acknowledges the need for government to "solve peoples'" problems when it (gov't) is the only one that can do it. I reckon healthcare, education, warfightin', and environmental regulation all fall in to that category.
Further, I don't think secretary Powell can give a comprehensive assessment of the capabilities of the adminstration to git'r'dun.

This guy can't make up his mind which party suits his beliefs.
He ran the republican ticket until he realized he'd never be president with them. Then supported and voted for obama, and It wasn't two months ago he was whining we need more government because the people want to pay more taxes and have bigger government. Today he's whining how obama f-up with trillion dollar debt and huge government and obama wants to add layers more of big government.
He should have been a politician instead of an affirmative action general. If he is a republican, or at least a RINO, why did he vote and support obama when he knew obama wanted the socialism he's now creating ? Oh ! I know, it's because obama was black...
maliRUSHdisorder, some people have ethics & morals. You know, rules one lives by.
he's saying what a lot of us independents who voted for the potus are thinking. i did not purposely vote for a massive increase in deficit and debt.
Yes he is, if he had quit at the banks and tarp it would have been OK, had he forced GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy sooner it would have been OK, had he opted to change regulations for these industries along with the bail outs it would have been great, as it is now he seems to be mowing through things that get in his way so he can get to what he wants to do and I am not sure I know what that is now, it's not about the end game so much as it is about how you play it.

Yes, she is scay, isn't she?
When will Obama et al stop blaming everyone except themselves? With Obama, the buck always stops somewhere else.
Obama promised that unemployment wouldn't go higher then 8% if the Congress passed his stimulus bill, but it has rocketed to 9.6 percent. Obama was wrong. Similarly, Obama promised to balance the budget and instead he has created a two trillion dollar deficit in only five months. Obama was wrong again.
Given Obama's poor track record after only 5 months in office, Gen. Powell is right to say that Obama is fully responsible for the 2 trillion dollar deficit he's created with his own stimulus bill, multiple supplemental budgets and other out-of-control spending, and Gen. Powell is right to ask Obama to focus more on the nation's economic problems.
buyer's remorse.
Perhaps we should reserve judgment until Sept. 11, the day that George W finally got to work. When you put Obama's job in perspective, we can see how much is on his plate and how far he has come so far. Unemployment is a lagging indicator of how things are going and the stock market is a forward looking indicator. As long as that doesn't crater, then things may not be as bad as they seem at the moment. In this economy when business is not creating jobs and expanding, then the govt is forced to stimulate by injecting money and creating jobs and fixing infrastructure. I'm holding my judgment until September.
You are right that the stock market is a "forward-looking indicator." Thats why the stock market crashed last October just as it became apparent that Obama was going to become the next President ---- the smart money fled before Obama could create huge deficits, introduce ruinous new energy taxes, and generally create havoc in the economy.
Clarification plant,
Actually in Sept. 2008, McCain was actually catching Obama in the polls and had drawn even. The stock crash is what elected Obama, not the other way around.
Maybe Powell is honest or maybe he is an opportunist...which makes him a politician. I'm not sure if people watched the style that powell used on king's show, but it was positively Obamian. King threw his past words at him and powell had to acknowledge them because they were his , but then of course, he had to throw in a "but".
This guy Obama isa joke and you supporters of him looking for ...HOPE or CHANGE, need to look in the mirror and ask yourselves, what am I going to do for myself . To rely on Obama to or the Government to take care of your neds is pretty despcable ...at least for an adult. Healthcare, Maui, laug or rapierwit is your responsibility and no one else's. This belief that we can somehow perfect ourselves throw enlightened government is farce. We ask too much of government and not enough of ourselves. look at the financial crisis which can be traced to the housing bubble.
People went off and bought homes with no money down on 2 year adjustable rate mortgages. Some of these people were betting that the value of their homes would go up and they could get out before the adjustment when they didn't , well those people just walked. those people knew what they were getting into, but when things went to hell , they went to the government to bail themselves out, ditto the big banks .And, government, seeking to perpetuate itself and keep us needing it obliged us by having money to bail out fannie and the banks and creating mortgage loan modifications. Yes, Obama like Bush will reward stupid decisions.
GM and Chrysler made many stupid business decisions over the last 7-8 years. GM went almost toally to larger SUV's and neglected their cars and offered too many people no money down and 0% interest. Chrysler sold out to daimler thinking it should be global and as a rsult Daimler ran it into the ground. Additionally all of the Big 3 automakers made bad deals with the unions way back and continued to do so over and over again. They make bad decisions and you the taxpayer pay the price and Obama and his like are all to eager to engage. He says he does not want to be in the car business, then why is he in the car business? He could have let them go into bankruptcy, but noooooo it was to great an opportunity to get control and we let them do it and we shake our heads like idiots and say, Oh he's so so samrt afterall he's a Constitutional scholar from HARVARD." Alan Dershowitz is a Constitutional scholar from Harvard as well and probably better than Obama by about 10X but I don't want Dersh running things either.
Don't worry, all you enlightened progressives, you'll get the government as a partner in everything you do, gosh darn it . Afterall, government only wants to help and protect you from you and if there are unintended disasters, well they can always say , " But we only wanted to help, our motives were pure."
Give me a good ole reactionary who tells me I'm on my own. I can rspect him more than this charlatan who, by the way ,filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy 10 years ago in Chicago...check it out
How is anyone surprised by Obama's big-government agenda? To his credit, Obama made it clear during his campaign that he wanted the US to morph into Sweden. All of a sudden these people who supported him are having second thoughts because he is doing what he said he would do? Maybe seeing what a mess the mini-Sweden state of California has become has caused them to have second thoughts?
I think most people in this country realize that this past election was more a referendum on health care more than anything else. People are screaming out for coverage for themselves and their families. All the republicans are able to muster is a world class blitzkrieg of fear and intimidation.
Watching a TV special the other night, I was amazed by the number of professional people who have been out of work for two years now. Two years and all the right has been able to offer up is more fear, more threats, followed by continued fear-mongering. The right believes that is they scream loud enough that the rest of the country will forget about the most corrupt, mis-managed and outright corrupt administration this country has ever had to endure. The country could easily understand that we simply could not follow along as is it were business as usual. Two more years of republican rule would have been the coup d'état of representative government. We escaped tyranny by the skin of our teeth.
So while Colin Powell would suggest that we continue on a course of draconian empire building, mainstream America simply wants to be able to live without the fear of the hospital taking their house out from under them.
It must be so convenient for Colin Powell to sit up on high, not unlike Kaligua, while actual citizens live in day to day fear of getting sick. Republicans - not forgetting to mention Dino's like Max Baucus - in this country have allowed big industry to fill their pockets while playing god to their citizens.
Perhaps in Mr. Powell's next interview, he can explain how he can justify his part in that monstrosity of a political administration he was so deeply involved in.
We would not be in the current mess if Colin Powell had stood up to Bush and Cheney and stopped their madness. I realize that you got yours, and to a republican, that is all that matters in life, but those struggling to get by see it in a different light.
Keep screaming like madmen. We will vote you out of office one by one until we get this country back.
Well, at least Powell can speak English. That will be an edge over the Sarah Palin show, which might be heading for a trainwreck at this very moment. Powell has always been reasonable, thoughtful and successful in the endeavors he has taken on in Government. He might be ready to run for President. We'll just have to wait and see. I believe his 'wish' that Obama does well in office is now being challenged by the fiscal realities of our time and perhaps he might be in the best position to counter what clearly is becoming an Obama Presidency that is running off track. Frankly, I am a bit surprised that Obama has allowed the Country to be so badly swindled by the Banks. The Country needs Industry, not Banking. We have had enough Banking swindles to last a lifetime. It is time to put the Country to work. In fact, the opportunity to do that may have already passed. Even a good effort here by Obama will likely not provide the Industry we need in the time that we need it.
I made my pitch before. Nobody listened. So it is now into the jaws of JAWS as the Country embraces it's "Egghead Depression". Good Luck all. You're going to need it.
There is plenty of money for everything if we ditch the monetary system and lose the idea that there needs to be rich and poor in society. The problems we face are caused by a lack or human evolution. There are too many people with wealth and power who think they are separate from everyone and everything. We are all one. When those with the power to change society move toward a world based on this realization, then things will improve. Don't be fooled by the illusion of separateness.
From each according to his ability to each according to his need. Viva Obama. (LOL)
Powell supported this idiot community organizer and now he's a little concerned because El Presidente is turning the clock back to Jimmy Carter? You've got to be kidding me. Hurry up 2012.
Thank you.
