Splits Threaten GOP 'Renaissance'
Divisions within the Republican Party threaten chances of a "Republican renaissance," the term party chief Michael Steele used Wednesday to describe gubernatorial victories in New Jersey and Virginia. As both parties now turn their attention to the 2010 midterms, tensions between moderates and conservatives in the GOP are heating up in important races from Florida to Illinois to California. One moderate, Rep. Mark Kirk, has contacted Sarah Palin's camp, hoping an early endorsement could head off potential trouble. It's the kind of move that's been repeating even in seats of Yankee moderatism like Connecticut. In Washington, Sen. John Cornyn of Texas warned of self-immolation. "We need to temper our conservative approach with pragmatism," the senator told The Washington Post.

we have are splits and the Dem's have there's if the were united we would have had socialized medicine in July. thank god for the blue dogs. the dems with brains.

Do you know what the most successful Health care system is in this country? Its not Kaiser, Blue Cross, Health Partners or Well Point. It happens to be the VA, which happens to be government run. For us vets who are lucky enough to have the VA, we never have to worry about how we are going to pay for any illness that may come down the road. Don't have to worry about losing my house, life savings or passing debt onto my kids. Every American should be so lucky.

angels81.. newjokerR doesnt care about what a quality system provides..He/her/it is just afraid of the boogey man government taking away his rights to be stupid.

i agree im a vet myself but have never used the system. the government should expand that system to include the uninsured. and just leave the privet insurance alone.
Thanks for your service

slmpirate
that was about the dumbest come back i have ever seen. Is character assassination something they teach you at your parades
angels81
And why should we just leave alone the for profit insurance companies? What do they really do? How do they add to the quality of health care in this country? They cost a lot, they don't cover everyone and their selective as to who they will cover. Whats the upside to a system like that?
NewyorkerR
being free Americans that we are now!! you can always chose not to get private insurance. . if the government wasn't involved in it now it would be much cheaper. this antitrust nonsense and states with all the different mandates is what keep it expensive.
Ill say it one more time i have nothing against the government setting up or expanding something separate form privet insurance to deal with the uninsured. but lumping the private insurance into it is just politicians grabbing more power. its just that simple.
hfb1053
I agree angels81. The VA, although it has had it's problems, is a godsend and a real reward for those who join the military. I have friends that served in VietNam that are now needing serious medical care as they age and the VA is there for them.
democracyforall
even Veterans have insurance angels81. Kudos to the VA.
We need government clinics run by government doctors and specialists in order to get the costs down for those who are indigent and/or too sick to work. The stimulus money could get these started. Fees will be paid by patients who are able, local, state and federal funds, not insurance. What is Obama waiting for?

I love how you call another commenter dumb and yet you can't spell or form a proper sentence. Huzzah for hypocrisy!

My job didn't afford me the time to type and play on the Internet. i was to busy getting shot at. thanks for the attempted caracter assassination. i guess when all else fails you just attack something dumb. you are a fine person.
hfb1053
Newyorker - you are a real piece of work. You think that getting shot at is your excuse for everything. There are other military people who do not use that as an excuse to be ignorant but rather as a reason to improve their skills. My job also didn't afford me the time to type and play on the internet but still I'm able to do it. If you can throw all those remarks around about how lame and stupid others are, then you should be able to take it rather than turning into a sniveling, insulting crybaby. You are NOT a fine person.

Actually square, as an owner of two small businesses our companies did better under the Bush presidency than under Clinton.
But either party has to deal with the fact Government has gotten too big and out of control.
Neither wants to get the social programs under control, because they have no clue as to how to do it.
The small business community has a real solution to the uninsured people since the mid ninety's, but after it passed the congress seven years running, it was kept off the table in the Senate by the likes of Daschle, Kennedy and Clinton.
So as we close down one business and add to the rolls of the unemployed, trim down our other business to survive, we feel the angst of so many Americans, vets or not(myself a Vet) we don't blame anyone in particular, the unions made their own bed, financia institutions l made theirs because of lack of oversight, you could expound on the root causes all day and when it boils down, we will find the biggest problem is ourselves.
We have evolved into a me or I society, instead of a we and us.
At anyrate the unfolding of this congress will make the days of Danrostinkowski look like a cake walk, carbon tax, healthcare takeover not much reform there, energy policies by dumbing down, the list is endless and enough blame to share.
So leave the republicans to their demise of being arrogant and telling what members they have left who to vote for, and leave the democrats to wanting to get something for nothing, and in the end we shall see who the real losers are, and don't be surprised when you realize it is us the taxpayers, who don't have the resource to keep paying.

Unfortunately, the Southern Conservatives that you refer to who most vociferously support Palin are the Republican's that actually have a message. It's a bit of an odd, somewhat-dysfunctional, and for the purposes of actually effectively running a nation's government is just simply wrong, message ... but it's a message, nonetheless. The remaining Republicans, those that may very well have some realistic and genuinely effective policy and program suggestions for the future are too busy trying to carry-on Bush's 'bumper sticker' politics-as-usual ... feeling it is real governance if you simply point fingers at the other side and say 'They're bad ... send them home.' Those Republicans should have learned from the '06 and '08 elections that that kind of philosophy and policy only works when the circumstances the country finds itself in happen to somewhat coincide with blaming the other side for producing those circumstances. What the Republicans also continue to fail to understand is that, assuming jobs will be one of if not the major driving issue in '10 and possibly the '12 elections, they have been unwilling to sit-down with Democrats and work in a true bipartisan manner to have any jobs-creating legislation passed besides the initial stimulus bill. The Republicans are in the minority. They will not be able to dictate government policy. But they can have an influence provided they do not continue to hang-on to the most rigid, far-right conservative principles and defy, deny and denounce anything more moderate, and instead agree to doing something, anything seen as proactive in the eyes of the American people and voter. Failure to do that will spell their continued failure, isolation and minimalization in the future.
MaliciousDisorder
Why do all the nutters care about the republican party ? They can't shut up about it when there own democratic party is falling apart. You didn't hear but democratics lost a huge seat in deep blue Westchester County NY.
There is no split in the GOP. Media'a making it up again. We're just allowing those that want to be democratics get out and go elsewhere. France might do..
angels81
Well lets see how Dems did. We lost two Governorships, but gained two more seats in the house. I think I'll take two more house seats over two Governorships.

I just don't get why they aren't going in that direction. i would have no problem paying for a comprehensive system that guaranteed 100% coverage for Americans. but this junk they are working on will still leave people uninsured and that would be tragic.

NewYorker... I am getting to see you as more complex than I intially thought...
However, please help me undertsand the two different positions you are taking on this issue of universal coverage as you posted just above and the statement you made at the very beginning of this topic..
I have arrived at my position on this through a tremendous amount of thought and consternation and evaluation of my own philosophical value system. Flawed as it may be, this is my position:
I believe that healthcare is not a priveldge. I believe we should give a hand up to those who are less fortunate, I believe that Jesus was right when he was quoted as saying "that we are to be judged by how we treat the least among us". I believe that making a profit from illness is immoral, I believe that as the richest nation known to mankind that we can do better tahn this in America.
NewyorkerR
i also believe health care is not a privilege but i do believe in privet insurance. i also don't believe health insurance is right. so we need to set something like the VA or expand it to cover all Americans. i also see that we will be having a shortage of medical professionals to service the system. so how about offering free tuition to people so they can work for the VA for 5 years to pay back the government for the schooling. kind of like a Peace core for health care professionals. having a daughter in med school at a very high price tag being threatened by the government that they will be cutting there pay isn't the smartest thing the libs are spouting. remember this hole thing is a joke if we don't have the doctors and nurses to support the system.

You cannot have a "renaissance" when the patient/party/organization is comatose, legally brain-dead, and has one foot in the grave. The GOP does not understand new thinking, freshness, entrepreurial politics or humanitarianism. They would need at least some of those and are currently bereft.
NewyorkerR
this is the same argument Hitler used.
hfb1053
NY- that sounds like a throwaway remark; a bunch of BS.
johnsmith1882
ha NY, good Godwin, you sure showed him!
Johnnyappleseed
Doesn't sound like you have much of a grip on it either hivanh
hfb1053
hivanh: I don't think its that the GOP doesn't understand new thinking, etc. I think its that they are so consumed with keeping every last red cent (there's a revealing red) they have to themselves. They live in fear that some poor child might actually benefit thru a social program that their money may have been forced to support. It's the same old "I've got mine, who cares about you" mentality that stops them from new thinking. New thinking to a repub is how can I keep more of my money and not have to contribute anything to government. Or, abortion is against their god's will but after the birth, there is no money for a social program (the dreaded social word) to help support that crack baby that the mother wanted to abort. Or, no money for public education because the repubs can afford private school.

Mark Kirk has to actually HOPE he gets Palin's endorsement. He is very centrist and somewhat has a chance to actually win in a blue state like Illinois. I could see another NY-23 Palin Purge with him.
Best advice for him? Tell Palin to take a hike! The only way he is going to win is running as a moderate and keeping Palin out of Illinois. If Palin thought she was hated on the East Coast, then she has never been from Chicago (which Kirk is from, sort of)

Deeds was a conservative Right winger and Bible thumper who was at least clever enough to run as a moderate conservative. Running against a dud Democratic candidate that was enough to win, but they can't expect that all Dems will be as piss poor candidates as Deeds and Corzine in the future.

Seeing as the two national elections for the house seats were won by Democrats, If I was a repug I wouldn't be gloating to much about the demise of the Democratic party.

My dream result from this situation would have moderate former republicans forming a 3rd party that is joined by a significant number of moderate democrats and viably contends with the 2 old parties. That fracturing of power lines would hopefully lead to the formation of more viable parties which would eventually lead to a more equitable way of running this democracy.
manticore1223
I'm with you. If we could just wake up from the nightmare of two party politics.

The Washington Post is showing it's wishful left-thinking again.
The GOP just won 2 governorships and the Post is already praying for splits.
