Terror Suspects to Be Held Indefinitely?
The Obama administration has drafted an executive order that would give the president the power to detain terrorism suspects indefinitely, according to three senior government officials with knowledge of the decision. The Washington Post reports that the choice to reinstate this authority comes as a result of growing fears that Congress could stall plans to close Guantanamo by President Obama’s January deadline. Most civil liberties groups are against long-term incarceration, arguing that prisoners should either be tried or set free, but one government official said waiting for legislation on Guantanamo “could kill Obama’s plans.” The executive order could give Obama’s opposition reason to accuse him of neglecting the legislative branch of government. If the White House follows through with its decision, the detention center would be at a military facility on U.S. soil and prisoners’ detention would be reviewed annually. U.S. citizens would not be held in the system. Prisoners eligible for indefinite detention would be those whose witnesses could not, for one reason or another, testify against them, making their trial unbalanced.

Plantagenet
It is unconstitutional for the Obama administration to claim the power to hold defendants indefinitely without charges and without trial.
Progressive2
You're 100% correct.
Hawnzz
It is. How can he get this through the courts? Or does he not have to?
squiggy
He has executive authority and he used it, same as all the rest! It's a hoot, really, they are all the same but Congress is really to blame, they want to close Gitmo and let all the detainees free and Obama knows there are enough who should never be let go, that's the reality of it but Congress gives him no alternative. They tied his hands too!
Hawnzz
What the hell happened to "Checks and Balances?"
theoPitt
Oh, this is just too funny. How you lefties liking the "change" yoiu voted for?

Progressive2
"U.S. citizens would not be held in the system. "
Oh geee I wonder why? maybe because we know it's wrong? if you're going to do it why not put the same standards to the American Talibans? I'm sure it will save lives.
GM2009
Shouldn't the Obamapologists be swarming this page with excuses for Obama's furthering ofthe Bush agenda beyond what Bush even dared?
squiggy

You just insulted yourself I guess...lol
GM2009
It's comforting to know that there will always be pant-pissing authoritarian-submissives like squiggy to revel in delight as the police state clamps down...until one day it finds itself in a foreign jail with no explanation and no way out. Congratulations, moron, for cheerleading the end of your own nation's rights and freedoms.
There are still quite a few like yourself, about 27% of the population, mostly one-toothed, inbred, knuckledraggers from the Kansas and the rest of the Southern-Sewer states
squiggy

We are not like you.
We won't defend our party while they break our laws.
Unlike you and your party who cheered the invasion of a country for lies.
He's going to be a one term President.
squiggy
Oh yeah, don't forget what a dirt bag Sanford is and how he should resign!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm up off the floor now, nice day planned tomorrow. Finished the scotch and ready for bed. Will sleep very well tonight. Relaxed knowing the world hasn't changed one damn bit! Men are still men and the game is still on! Peace out!

I see Obama learned from Bush.
Sneak this out while MJ is all over your TV on a Friday.
squiggy
That was my point! He snuck this in, the Dems snuck in 300 pages of something on the cap and trade bill no one read and it's business as usual for Congress. LOL
MaliciousDisorder
Fire all 8 republicans that voted for these 300 pages
SharksBreath
Squiggy: What's so funny about your President breaking the law.
We didn't think it was funny when Bush did it.
You are F'd up in the head.
Hawnzz
Nah... it's just conservatives justified it (along with torture/rape/illegal war/etc) then and will cry bloody murder now. The irony is delicious...
squiggy
Thanks Hawnzz, I read this and just busted out laughing, wasn't watching that bottle I had open and couldn't help myself, the Congress has left Obama no out for dangerous people, close gitmo and don't bring them on US land, it's the irony that got me, at least God opens a window before he closes the door, Congress operates a bit differently!
Hawnzz
Got that right...
MaliciousDisorder

Charles116, Where can we turn you in for money ?
AiriqS
Is it even REMOTELY possible that these detainees are actually dangerous men dedicated to harming Americans?
Is it even REMOTELY possible that Obama made his 180 on this issue after actually having the opportunity to be fully briefed?
Is it even REMOTELY possible that Obama & Bush were only acting in the spirit of saving American lives?
squiggy
Exactly! He read the briefs and did a 180 but his base held him to close Gitmo and Congress tied his hands with where to put them and then he thought the world would take them off his hands and no one is helping more than 2 or 3 and at US cost! Reality is a sobering thing! LOL Maybe not for me last night but this morning it is still clear!
Genni2002
The invasion was based on lies, there is the torture issue and people do have rights. The problem is that this is a country that stands on freedom and innocent until PROVEN guilty. So we relax our own standards.
We invade a country on the grounds of freedom and similar talk (certainly cannot say it was due to the 9/11 terror) on one hand and simultaneously take away freedom on the other. Then we let the problem sit and fester. Shady Congress and sadly am dubious about our President's ability to get out of the hole he has sunk into. Not a Dem or a Repub, just HATE hypos!

I dont know what to do with the prisioners. if they were terrorist, dont they get executed like spys?BUT WHAT I AM STARTING TO SEE,IS POLITICS LIKE ALWAYS.DIDNT OBAMA SAY AND THE ADMINISTRATIONSAY THEY WERE CLOSING GITMO,ETC.i DONT HAVE THE ANSWER SO I WONT criticize,BUT THIS IS ALL THE SAME AS THE BUSH administration, and I am resenting so much the same of everything with a new COAT OF PAINT,.....And I have offered to take in whighous at a milliondollars each, because if we can afford to send them to Bermuda,....so they were not guilty??then who did we imprison.
Libintia
I...I'm not even sure what the argument here is.
In the words of Ron White: "Next time you have a thought....let it go."
SharksBreath
So when do you prosecute the people who put us in this situation.
Mr. Obama.
squiggy
Good luck since he is now using executive privilege and doing the same thing, like Pelosi knew about the torture and lied about it and then it was confirmed by Panetta and dropped. Have you got it yet Shark, none of them operate by law, it is expediency. LOL Wake up! They are all the same!
Hawnzz
We don't know Pelosi lied. It was the C.I.A. under Bush after all. They have lied about many things and I don't see why this would be any different.
(Though I'm certainly not going to be shocked if they do their homework and prove she did, which they should.)
AiriqS
And the CIA under Obama/Penetta basically said Pelosi lied.
amapola101
I like Pres Obama, this Pres promised to close Gitmo, blah blah, blah. either lying or incompetecnce of not knowing what really was happening.Either way I am starting to see many 180% degree turns on many things. the truth is if they are terrorist, you execute them. the truth is if they are guilty of something ,you incarcarte, them gitmo is a necessity. And now there can be no torture.?The problem is if they are not guilty of anything, really, but unfortunate timing,or assosiation with the wrong person? Our pres was guilty of assosiating with Rev Wright. and not guilty. we are holding people prisioners, that do not belong in jail.In this country rapist, murderers, killers are not imprisioned till proven and convicted.I do not want anyone who can harm america free, if not dead. But,I can take whighous at a million dollars each instead of sending them to Bermuda.!!!Its a real Dilema and it should not have been used as a way to win votes. Also,I have a feeling that our jail, without torture is the best life many of these people have had,and many probably do not want to go anywhere. This is America.
MaliciousDisorder
It's the white half of Obama that's doing all these 180's
Hawnzz
What the hell?
