The Myth of the Slacker Male?
A new study tailor-made for discussion on The View has been released, claiming to debunk the myth of the slacker stay-at-home man who doesn't help out around the house. Working women tend to see their partners as inept at chores and housekeeping as a way to feel more feminine, and to alleviate guilt about being the breadwinner, the study says. "Working women who provide the majority of the household's income to the family continue to articulate themselves as the ones who 'see' household messes and needs as a way to retain claims to an element of a traditional feminine identity," said Dr. Rebecca Mesienbach, author of the paper "The Female Breadwinner." "By directing the housework done by their husbands, they maintain a sense of control over the traditionally feminine sphere of the home.” The sure-to-be-controversial research lines up with a study conducted last year by The Guardian which found that 30 percent of people (and 32 percent of young people) agreed with a statement labeling women’s societal role as “to be good mothers and wives.”

Remember, Dave Barry informed us (with no research documentation whatever) that we men are cleaning-impaired because we are constitutionally unable to see dirt in amounts smaller than one-third of a cubic yard...

How very Republican of you. Intentionally screw up a job that would benefit your entire household that could most easily and efficiently be done by you so that you can contract it out to private business.

Cut Dems a little slack--he may be helpless but at least by hiring a housekeeper he is helping the economy!

You're quite correct, cville. I wasn't thinking.

SFGiants: Dem's housekeeper is probably an undocumented illegal alien.
I also wonder if he is paying the housekeeper's Social Security and FICA taxes, as required by law...

I think women criticize other women, to feel more feminine, or more alpha feminine too.
I had a female clerk yesterday called me a little girl. If a man had talked to me a demeaning tone like that in public, it would be seen as sexist, if women do it, then it means they are taking charge.
Some women bosses can be horrible to other women, and so nice to the men.

You really think if a man had been in charge of this site, they would have allowed the commentators to be so demeaning on Ms. Penney's board. They were really horrible. I hope she is ok.

I taught my sons to clean. My husband had to learn, I saw no reason why I should clean up after him, I had to work, I had to pay part of the bills, it was in our premarital agreement.
I think everyone is here for one purpose only. To find their own purpose, and to enjoy the gifts God has given us, and to care for the earth and nature so we pass along better than we got, and to provide morals and laws enough to make sure humans, with our apparent inability to just get along..........give each other enough elbow room to get along, or courts and police to give us the safety necessary to get along.
Like Doreen, I have found many women in the work force to be doing what they would have a fit if men did.
There are good men, and good women, and clean men, and clean women.
I see a lot of talk shows with women who have husbands who work, who see themselves as wives and mothers, but from the looks of their homes, they are just slobs freeloading off some guy who they then expect to come home after shopping, and cook for their lazy selves, and clean up and take care of the kids.
You can't have it on both sides of the fence women.
I think it is about partnering up in a world that is a bit overwhelming alone, and I think God gives us some great people to help us out, both men and women, when we look around and help others, and accept help when we need it.
Thank you.
