Yankees Win World Series

CS - Yankees World Series
Jed Jacobsohn / Getty Images

The Yankees won their 27th World Series Thursday, after beating the Phillies 7 to 3 in Game 6, with a crowd of 50,315 people looking on. Pedro Martinez managed to last four innings, giving up four runs and three hits to the Yankees, as fans flashed yesterday's New York Post poster of Martinez in a diaper and chanted "Who's Your Daddy?" Hideki Matsui, who knocked in six runs to tie the single-game World Series record, was named MVP. Andy Pettitte pitched almost six innings for the Yankees, and left the game to a standing ovation. After the win, Alex Rodriguez wept, moved no doubt, not just by the win, but because he will no longer have to answer questions about choking in the post-season. A ticker tape parade for the Yankees is scheduled for Friday.

Does this mean all my Jeter & A-rod & Matsui graded rookie cards will be going up in value soon? What's also weird about this Series is the Yankee training camp is 8 miles west of me and Phillies is 8 miles north of where I live so I won either way. I'm really opposed to the concept of 'the best team money can buy' but seems there may be some validty to that philosophy.

cesspool"

actually, there is no validity to that philosophy. The Yankees have been the highest paid team in baseball--hell maybe in all of sports for at least the past ten years. If being the highest paid team meant instant success, wouldnt the Yankees win every year? This is their first title since 2000.

So the "best team money can buy" is a lazy argument at best.

Even when you have the best players one team, and they happen to be the most highly paid, they still have to...you know, actually beat everyone else. The Yankees aren't playing against high school teams, theyre playing against other professional baseball teams--comprised of talented guys. Thats why its been nine years since their last championship.

cesspool, I'm not sure what it means re the value of your rookie cards, but I do know that it means the dark fascist night (pace Gore Vidal) which is the No Fun League once again descends on America, until next spring anyway.

This isn't really what I'd call cheat sheet worthy. Any sports column anywhere has this.

Me, too. What a bunch of spoiled big boy brats. How millions of people can get a kick out of them vicariously baffles me. No one wants to grow up, no wonder this country is such a mess. It's just a game, people. And, unless you are a gambler, their winning has nothing to do with you.

Through it all, A-Rod continues to be a self-centered jerk. And I've never considered him to be particularly bright. It must bug him that Matsui is the man of the hour.

I'm unimpressed - Yankee victories are bought and paid for. They can't win - if they do win, it's paid for; if they don't win, it's stupidity.

A series marked by a plethora of errors ,grotesque managing and a myriad of blown calls by umpires, managers ,players and the press .Oh yes and baseball is meant to be played in sunlight and heat and not after kids bedtimes in the middle of the bloody night in front of frozen patrons .....bush league stuff it was .

The Yankees are the Goldman Sachs of sport. You buy the best, you win almost automatically.

I wonder if the Yankees have gotten their swine flu vaccine ahead of everyone else (like Goldman execs have).

bezvodka:
I posted this earlier ( scroll up) but it bears repeating. You dont win automatically. The Yankees are always the highest paid, but they dont win every year. I know we're a nation of people who wants simplistic reasons for everything, but in sports..especially in sports, there is no "exact science" for success.

.Of the.ten highest paid players in the game the first five are Yankees. Highest paid pitcher in baseball , highest paid cheating third baseman in baseball . Would you at least say they have a running start?

First of all , the Yankee mgr , acted like a kid when he was given the trophy.Screaming, etc . He is the mgr not a one of the players . Like Torrie , with that payroll , a 15 year old could have managed that team and won . .Of the.ten highest paid players in the game the first five are Yankees .Did you think they would lose? That was a disgrace.
A-rod, makes more that some teams payroll .How can they compete? Speaking of A-Rod, after the win, Alex Rodriguez wept, moved no doubt, not just by the win, but because he will no longer have to answer questions about choking, cheating, and knocking up celebs. in the post-season.
I am also glad that Rollins got his mouth kick in the ass along with the Phils cocky Manager. So you see this is about baseball , not just Yanks -Phils .

johnnieg:

I would say this:

Highest paid player doesnt always mean best player. Salary is based on specific performance. For instance, if a player hit 50 home runs, stole 50 bases, and won a gold glove, and his contract was up, he might get paid something like 20 million a year. Is he worth it? Well, he was the very best player at his position for that ONE particular year and his salary reflects it.

Maybe the next season he pulls a hamstring, breaks an ankle, or has some other ailment that doesnt allow him to perform at that same level. Guess what, he's not the best guy at his position anymore. Someone else is having a better year. But he's still making 20 million because that was the contract.

As for Alex Rodriguez, one of the stipulations for being busted for steroid use is regular drug testing. Well, now he's tested on a regular basis. And he was clean all year. Guess what, he had the best post season of his career. He's the best player in baseball--with, or without drugs. Its just a fact.

What I don't understand is why people are mad that the Steinbrenners want to assemble the best team they can. Isnt that the point? Sometimes it works out. But like I said before, it usually doesnt.

And don't be fooled by all this "big and small market" crap. The other owners are millionaires too. They just choose not to spend the money that Steinbrenner does. Like I said before, the money thing is a lazy argument.
