    1. Iran on the Brink of Nuclear Weapons

The International Atomic Energy Agency has a bombshell report on the state of Iran’s nuclear program: the nation is on the brink of nuclear capability. The Washington Post reports that secret intelligence given to U.N. nuclear officials shows that Iran has the ability to create atomic weapons, having mastered the “critical steps” involved in the process. The revealing documents reportedly present evidence that a Soviet scientist helped teach Iran about detonation reactions, and experts in Pakistan and North Korea also tutored the nation over the years. Officials believe that Iran didn't stop its program in 2003. Instead, money for research was funneled through seemingly innocuous civilian institutions. While Israel continues to flirt with the idea of attacking Iran’s nuclear facilities, the U.S. maintains that Iran has the skills to create a bomb quickly—but that doesn’t mean it has already done so.

    2. Thousands Protest at White House

Some 10,000 activists protested outside the president’s home Sunday against the construction of TransCanada’s Keystone XL pipeline. The protests were deliberately held exactly one year before the 2012 election, in order to send a message to President Obama that he will lose support from environmentalists if he builds the pipeline. Supporters say the 1,700-mile pipeline will create thousands of jobs and reduce U.S. dependence on Middle Eastern oil, but others say it is bad for the environment. The founder of the Natural Resources Defense Council said, “He’s trying to get elected, but there’s also a really important decision that he’s got to make to put us on the right path. That’s what leadership is.”

After calling emergency talks Sunday, Greece has agreed to form a new unity government, the nation's president said in a statement. The new government will see that the EU's bailout plan is put into action, and will not be led by Prime Minister George Papandreou. Papandreou met with opposition leader Antonis Samaras to discuss a potential power-sharing deal to help the government move forward. The prime minister has agreed to resign if leaders can reach an agreement for a temporary government that will land Greece a bailout from the EU. Samaras refused to participate in further talks unless Papandreou’s resignation was on the table.

Herman Cain’s sexual-harassment scandal has begun to hurt his poll numbers. A new Reuters/Ipsos poll found that the number of Republicans who view Cain favorably has dropped 9 points, from 66 to 57 percent. His support has also dipped among all registered voters, from 37 percent to 32 percent. The poll revealed that 53 percent of respondents believe the sexual-harassment allegations are true. Ipsos pollster Chris Jackson said, “The most striking thing is that Herman Cain is actually seeing a fairly substantial decline in favorability ratings toward him, particularly among Republicans.”

A young woman referred to as "Ashley" by Occupy protesters died on Saturday of a reported heroin overdose in a tent at Occupy Vancouver, only three days after a young man overdosed at the site. Vancouver's Mayor Gregor Robertson responded with a call to close down the site, saying, "This loss of life and the overdose just a few days ago clearly demonstrate that the situation here in camp has deteriorated." He said city officials would be taking steps to break up the tent city "as soon as possible, with a safe resolution being absolutely critical to that." Robertson also said he had visited the site several times in the past week, though protesters denied it. A Vancouver police spokeswoman confirmed that the woman who died was found "unresponsive" in a tent, but she wouldn't confirm whether the death was due to a drug overdose.

It's a banner year for the New York City Marathon. Kenyan Geoffrey Mutai won the men's division with a course-record-shattering time of 2:05:06. The second- and third-place finishers also beat the course's previous all-time best of 2:07:43. Mutai, who won the Boston Marathon this year, takes home a $500,000 prize. On the women's side, Ethiopian Firehiwot Dado scored her first major marathon win. Dado, who previously won three races in Rome and one in Mumbai, surged in front of Kenya's Mary Keitany—who entered as a favorite to win—late in the race, and also held off Bronx-based runner Buzunesh Deba, who was hoping to become the first city resident to win in decades. Meanwhile, photographer Joao Silva—who lost both legs after stepping on a mine in Afghanistan one year ago—finished the race in under three hours.

    7. Penn State Board Reviews Sex Scandal

Allegations against Jerry Sandusky, the former defensive coordinator for the Penn State football team who was charged yesterday with sexually abusing eight boys and barred from campus on Sunday, are slowly being revealed. The victims testified before a state grand jury that they were in their early teens when some of the abuse occurred, and there is evidence that some may have been even younger. One victim, now 27, testified that Sandusky started a "soap battle" in the shower that led to many instances of sex assault. The same accuser said he often traveled to charity functions and Penn State games with Sandusky, but was always threatened with being sent home when he resisted Sandusky's advances. A janitor allegedly witnessed another child, estimated to be between 11 and 13, being pinned up against a wall while Sandusky gave him oral sex in 2000, according to the grand jury. Sandusky was arraigned and released on $100,000 bail on Saturday. Late Sunday, Tim Curley, Penn State's athletic director, and Gary Schultz, the vice president for finance and business, reportedly stepped down because after allegations of covering-up the scandal.

Do teen pop sensations have signature pouts? Mariah Yeater, the woman who claims Justin Bieber is the father of her baby, now says the baby has an uncanny resemblance to the singer, especially in his pout. New photos of the baby have been released. Yeater says, “Look, just look at his mouth. Look familiar? I pray that Justin sees these photos, looks at Tristyn, and knows in his heart that this is his child and our child. It’s going to be a nightmare for all of us if he keeps denying it.” Meanwhile, Bieber will take a DNA test in two weeks, when he returns to the United States from Europe, in order to prove he is not the father of the baby. He has repeatedly denied the accusation.

No major injuries were reported, although there were reports of several cracked buildings. At about 3:30 a.m. Sunday, a 4.0-magnitude quake hit the state’s central region. Roughly 24 hours earlier, a 4.7 quake hit in the same area. Some 30 aftershocks were felt as far away as Texas and Wisconsin. Attacks by an Islamic militant group killed dozens of people in Nigeria over the weekend. The Red Cross said that more than 100 people had been killed, but the government estimated 69 deaths. Boko Haram took responsibility for the attacks, which included bombings of mosques and churches, followed by gun battles with police. President Goodluck Jonathan said, “They seem to be one step ahead of us. Security agencies are gathering information that will enable them to catch up.” Boko Haram claims that the government has tortured its members and carried out extrajudicial killings. A spokesman said, “More attacks are on the way. We will continue attacking federal government formations until security forces stop their excesses on our members and vulnerable civilians.”

Parents who are afraid of vaccinations have been searching Facebook for licked lollipops, spit, and other items from children who have chickenpox. But federal officials are warning that such activity is ineffective and illegal. One infectious-diseases specialist explained that a lollipop licked by someone with chickenpox is unlikely to cause infection, but it could carry more dangerous viruses like hepatitis. Jerry Martin, a U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee, said the activity is also illegal because it is a federal crime to send viruses across state lines, and a conviction could lead to as many as 20 years in prison. Martin said, “If you are engaged in this type of behavior, you’re not only potentially exposing innocent people to dangerous viruses and illnesses and diseases, you’re also exposing yourself potentially to federal criminal prosecution.”

Police arrested at least six protesters after leaders of the Occupy Honolulu movement attempted to set up an encampment at a local park. The group had said earlier that it would begin to camp at the park at about its 10 p.m. closing time Saturday, and roughly 40 protesters were ready to pitch their tents when police officers arrived on the scene and ordered them to leave. Occupy Honolulu said it also stood “in solidarity” with the homeless people who are being forced to leave streets and parks as the city prepares to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference this week.

Greece’s political leaders must reach an agreement by Monday as to who will head the country’s interim government, said Elias Mossialos, a spokesman for Papandreou's ruling Socialist Party, on state TV Sunday. He said there was “common ground” between the ruling Socialists and the New Democracy Party and that the beginnings of the deal could be worked out by Sunday evening. His remarks come after a week of economic turmoil threatened the country’s EU bailout, climaxing in a narrow win for Papandreou in a confidence vote on Saturday morning.

The two camps said beforehand that they wouldn't talk about sexual-harassment accusations made against Cain, but he did take a swipe at media outlets such as Politico, which broke the harassment story last week. "There are too many people in the media who are downright dishonest," Cain said to a standing ovation. The two "debaters" barely disagreed on anything.

Could this be another hint that Will and Kate may be expanding their family? The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will make Kensington Palace their permanent London home, with Prince Harry joining them when they make the move in two years. They will take over the apartment where Princess Margaret once lived, a five-bedroom home with three reception rooms described by royal aides to be "the size of a terraced London house." Renovation on the apartment will begin in September 2012, and the couple is expected to move in sometime in 2013 after William finishes his duties as a search-and-rescue helicopter pilot in Anglesey, North Wales. The newlyweds currently split their time between their farmhouse in Anglesey and a one-bedroom apartment at St. James's Palace in London.

Brooks quit in July amid hacking allegations aimed at the company's News of the World tabloid and was arrested and subsequently released on bail days after she resigned. The question of why Brooks was given such a generous severance package will no doubt be raised when James Murdoch, Rupert Murdoch's son, returns to Westminster on Thursday to answer more questions from the Commons Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee about his knowledge of illegal activities that went down at the paper.
