    1. Iran Agrees to More Talks

At a long-awaited meeting Saturday in Istanbul, representatives from Iran and six members of the U.N. Security Council agreed to hold another round of negotiations over Iran's controversial nuclear program. Saturday's talks came after a year without negotiations, in which threats of military attack by Israel have escalated and Western nations have imposed crippling economic sanctions. European foreign-policy chief Catherine Ashton praised the opening discussions, calling them "useful and constructive." A Western diplomat said Iran had shown "serious engagement" and been willing to discuss "the heart of the issue." The next talks will take place in Baghdad on May 23 and could lead to Tehran allowing inspectors at all nuclear sites, despite having refused to do so in January.

    2. Secret Service Scandal Deepens

South America, prostitutes, secret services agents, and now throw in some military guys, too. After 11 secret service agents were placed on leave in Colombia after allegations that they brought several prostitutes back to their hotel in Cartagena during President Obama's trip there, the military said five of its service members may have been involved in the episode as well. Government sources confirm there was a dispute between one secret service agent and a prostitute, while one woman filed a complaint with the police—and the entire unit has been pulled. Prostitution is legal in pockets of Colombia, though the Secret Service considers it inappropriate—and some of the agents are married. In the last year, there were two other incidents with the Secret Service: a murder charge and a DUI.

The body overseeing Egypt's presidential election ejected 10 candidates from the race Saturday, including some of the top Islamist candidates. One of those denied held the post of deputy presidential by disgraced former president Hosni Mubarak, while another is a leading Muslim Brotherhood candidate. The head of the commission declined to explain their disqualification, but said they would have two days to appeal the decision. The election, held in May, is only the second presidential election with more than one candidate in Egypt's history.

The outbreak is expected to start late in the day and target the I-35 corridor, which includes Oklahoma City and Wichita, Kan., but forecasters have extended the danger area as far north as Minnesota. A tornado hit Norman, home of the University of Oklahoma, Friday, causing structural damage but no serious injuries.

The father of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, who was shot and killed by George Zimmerman as he walked back from a convenience store, says he used to talk to his son about the dangers of being black. Tracy Martin says he lectured his son on the possibility that his skin color could make him a target for suspicion and violence. “I’ve always let him know we as African-Americans get stereotyped,” he told USA Today. Zimmerman maintains that he acted in self-defense, while Martin’s family claims Trayvon was targeted because of his race. Zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder and his trial is set for May.

    6. U.N. to Deploy Monitors to Syria

The United Nations said Saturday that they will send unarmed monitors to Syria to oversee the three-day-old ceasefire, as reports came in earlier Saturday that Syrian forces shelled dissidents again. The Security Council finally came to an agreement after Russia approved several changes to the resolution that allowed for the small army of monitors. Meanwhile, in Syria, the bombings have reportedly targeted two major hubs, Jouret al-Shiyah and al-Qaradis. The violence comes after five were killed Friday when security forces opened fire at a protest. In Aleppo, there were reports that a funeral procession was fired on.

    7. Israel to Block Palestine Activists

As part of a campaign called “Welcome to Palestine,” 1,200 Europeans are planning to stage a pro-Palestinian protest in the West Bank. Organizers say the campaign, which is slated for April 15, was being held to support opening an international school and museum, but Israel says it’s a threat to public order and won’t allow the activists to enter the country. Some have already been notified that their airplane tickets have been canceled. The prime minister’s office released a letter to the activists pointing to the Middle East’s brutal regimes that better deserve a protest, and ending with “We therefore suggest that you first solve the real problems of the region, and then come back and share with us your experience.”

Despite being charged with a hate crime in the Tulsa shootings that killed three and wounded two—all black in a predominantly black neighborhood—19-year-old Jake England says that he is not racist. Prosecutors have pounced on a April 5 message on his Facebook page, in which England said that his father was killed by an “f---ing n----r.” After his arrest, England said that he used the words to vent anger at the man who killed his father, and not as a blanket statement, and that he has friends of all races.

    12. Romney to NRA: I’m Your Man!

When in doubt, cite the Constitution. Mitt Romney went on the offensive Friday, telling a crowd of NRA members in St. Louis that he’d be better for them than President Obama. Receiving wild applause and the occasional standing ovation during his 25-minute speech, Romney failed to touch on the core issues of the gun-toting crowd. That didn’t seem to matter. The Republican hopeful did a semi-rhetorical analysis of the president’s hot-mic moment, when Obama said he’d have “flexibility” after the election. “I’m not exactly sure what he meant by that, but looking at his first three years, I have a very good idea,” Romney said.

Megaupload.com, the enormous file-sharing site, has 25 million gigabytes of digital files stored after the government seized most of its assets and shut down the site in January. The cache is roughly equivalent to half the Library of Congress. On Friday, the federal government, the Motion Picture Association of America, and three other groups were ordered to negotiate what should be done by a U.S. District Court in Virgina. Megaupload's eccentric founder and majority owner, Kim Dotcom, is currently still in New Zealand appealing against extradition to the U.S.

Judge Jessica Recksiedler, who was assigned to hear the George Zimmerman case, disclosed that her husband works for the law firm of Mark NeJame, who is acting as the CNN analyst on the case. In a short hearing, she told the case’s lawyers of her conflict, which could allow Zimmerman’s attorney to request her removal from the case. ZImmerman’s lawyer says the issue worries him and he is considering asking for another judge next week. Zimmerman, who is being charged with second-degree murder in the killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, will enter a plea on May 29 and will seek bail on April 20.

The civilians and soldiers saluted current leader Kim Jong-un and pledged loyalty. It’s unclear where or how Assange will be present for the show, since he is under house arrest in Britain while he fights extradition to Sweden, where he faces sexual-assault charges.
