    1. Obama: Pressure House on Fiscal Cliff

The debate over the solution to the fiscal cliff continued on Saturday when Utah Rep. Orrin Hatch released a strong criticism of Obama's plan for the crisis, calling it "a classic bait-and-switch on the American people.” President Obama, meanwhile, used his weekly radio address on Saturday to urge Americans to pressure the House to pass his plan to deal with the fiscal cliff, which House Speaker John Boehner reportedly rejected on Thursday. So what now? If no deal goes through by Dec. 31, a series of draconian spending cuts will automatically go into effect while the Bush tax cuts will expire.

    2. Report: Israel Won’t Revoke Palestinian Accords

Before the United Nations vote that accepted Palestine as a nonmember observer state, Haartez reports, the Israeli government was considering offsetting its institutions’ debts with funds normally collected on behalf of the Palestinian Authority, including provisions of the Oslo accords. Now, post-vote, that move appears to be unlikely. A source in the industrial sector says the Palestinian market is growing, and that the Israeli business sector “will make it clear to the government that it wants to continue to work with” them.

    3. Morsi Announces Constitution Date

Egytian citizens can finally have their say on December 15th when they will vote to accept to approve or reject the country's newly drafted constitution. Meanwhile, protests in Cairo intensified on Saturday when pro-government demonstrators added to the mayhem of ongoing protests by their secularist rivals. While Egypt has been protesting for a week over President Mohamed Morsi’s decree banning legal opposition to his power, Saturday’s protests came after the Cabinet passed a draft of the constitution. The draft, which is friendly to the interests of the Muslim Brotherhood, was passed after a 20-hour vote and will be seen by Morsi late on Saturday. Morsi had claimed his decree would only last through the passing of a new constitution.

A Kansas City Chiefs player allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend and then fatally shot himself, police said Saturday. The player is being identified as Jovan Belcher, 25, of New York, although police have not confirmed this. The first incident occurred around 7 a.m., when Belcher and his girlfriend allegedly got into an argument and multiple shots were fired; there was also a three-month baby in the home. Belcher then reportedly drove to the Chiefs' practice facility, where a coach and the general manager reportedly tried to talk him down. But when police arrived, Belcher allegedly shot himself in the head. The Chiefs will still play the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

    5. Mental-Health Disorders to Change

The American Psychiatric Association voted Saturday on new revisions for its DSM-5, known as the bible of mental disorders. All the changes won’t be revealed until May, but the APA did announce Asperger’s will be removed as an individual disorder and integrated as an autism-spectrum disorder instead. As for new members of the mental-health club, binge drinking and hoarding will be added as categorized mental disorders. “I don’t believe we will have radically changed the prevalence” of these disorders, said David Kupfer, the chairman, who added that it’s a “myth we are pathologizing normal behavior.”

An estimated 500 Mexicans threw stones, rocks, and Molotov cocktails in the capital ahead of the inauguration of Enrique Peña Nieto, the country’s controversial new president. At least 25 people—both protesters and police—were injured in the clashes. One officer reportedly suffered a blow to his face by a stone, while another two were hit head-on by a Molotov cocktail. Tear gas was implemented by authorities in an attempt to quell the pandemonium. “We weren’t expecting something so violent,” an officer told AFP. Mexico’s new president took office shortly after midnight on Saturday, replacing outgoing Felipe Calderón.

That's what friends are for. According to sources familiar with News Corp's plans, the group is expected to name Robert Thomson—a close friend and confidant of chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch—as the leader of its new publishing company by the end of next week. The Australian-born Thomson is currently managing editor of The Wall Street Journal and editor in chief of its publisher Dow Jones & Co., which News Corp. acquired in 2007. Among the key decisions that will fall on Thomson's plate, if selected, include how to save the financially troubled New York Post and whether or not to acquire other U.S. newspapers.

SCOTUS couldn’t stop these brides. Penelope Gnesin and Brenda Sue Fulton’s wedding on Saturday at West Point’s Cadet Chapel marked the first same-sex wedding to take place at the U.S. Military Academy. Gnesin and Fulton (a West Point graduate) exchanged vows in an afternoon ceremony attended by around 250 guests. The two have been together for 17 years, holding a civil commitment, which lacks legal force, since 1999. Both brides reside in New Jersey, where gay marriage is still prohibited.

Could reality-TV princess Kim Kardashian be next in line for Bahrain’s cultural ambassadorship? Don’t hold your heavily fragranced breath. On Saturday, the reality star visited Bahrain to launch her milkshake franchise, only to be greeted by more than 50 angry Muslim protestors. Police threw stun grenades and even tear gassed the demonstrators, who were objecting to the reality star's visit. There were fans as well: several screaming devotees paid $1,360 to see Kim’s milkshake in the flesh. Several hardline Muslim politicians  had unsuccessfully tried to block the reality star’s visit in Parliament, due what they call her “extremely bad reputation.” Well, as Kim knows, any press is good press.

Then Friday, Aubry announced he's dropping his restraining order against Halle's current fiancé, Olivier Martinez, after their Thanksgiving fight left Aubry with a broken rib.

    12. China Demolishes House

No good meme goes unpunished. A large home that had become a new symbol of Chinese resistance to the government has been demolished. The five-story house, which was owned by a duck farmer and his wife, is the subject of a photo circulated widely on the Internet, showing the building standing alone in the middle of a freeway. The owners had refused to let authorities bulldoze it, citing unfair compensation. However, they apparently changed their minds after an offer of 260,000 yuan (more than $41,000), and Facebook users will have to move on.

Ouch. An actress who claims she was tricked into appearing in the Innocence of Muslims, the anti-Islam film that sparked violent protests across the Middle East last summer, was denied on Friday her request to have the video removed from YouTube. The request for a court order was her second, although she plans to appeal the decision. The judge in the case ruled that the actress was unlikely to prevail on grounds of copyright infringement. She claims that because the clip posted to YouTube did not have her approval it should be taken down. The court's counterclaim? It's YouTube.

A legendary Macau gangster was released on Saturday after nearly 15 years in prison. "Broken Tooth," who was convicted of criminal association, loan-sharking, and illegal gambling in 1999, was the head of a major gang that was involved in turf wars for control of the region's legendary casinos. But times have changed. Shortly after the kingpin was imprisoned, Portugal ceded control of the special administrative region to China, and since then internationally owned mega-casinos have superseded local establishments. The old days probably won't be back any time soon.

A group of Somali pirates released four South Korean sailors Saturday morning after holding them for nearly 19 months. Their freedom came after negotiations between the pirates and the company that owned the ship from which the sailors were taken. The release comes after the reported payment of a ransom. Although the pirates held the entire crew when they captured the oil tanker last April, the 21 non-Koreans were released within seven months.

North Korea announced Saturday morning that it plans to launch a rocket later this month, in an announcement from the country's state-run news agency—a move that South Korea immediately denounced as violating a United Nations treaty for the area. The three-stage rocket will reportedly launch a satellite into orbit in what will be the country's fourth attempt to do so. Shortly after the announcement, South Korea's foreign ministry released a statement decrying the planned launch as a "grave provocation that ignores the international community's concern and warnings" about long-range missiles.

    17. Wine Consumption Drops in France

And now, something from the Department of the Unexpected: wine-consumption levels in France are at a record low. Yes, drinking wine, which was once considered France's favorite pastime, just doesn't have the cachet it used to. In 1965 the average French adult drank 160 liters of wine per year; that number is now down to 57, and just 17 percent were regular wine drinkers as of 2010. The numbers may be due to health concerns and the rising popularity of juice and soda with meals. There's still no word on whether beret-wearing and snootiness numbers are also down.

Video gamers, rejoice! The hobby, once thought a nerdy pastime at best and a danger to society at worst, has leapt into the mainstream in recent years and is about to conquer one more aspect of high culture. The Museum of Modern Art in New York City announced on Thursday that it had acquired the first 14 titles in a planned 40-game collection for a new exhibit that will go up in March. The games, chosen for, among other things, "innovative approaches to technology and behavior", include Pac-Man, Tetris, and The Sims.

After a two-day outage, the Internet was reported to be back on in most of Syria on Saturday. Residents of the cities of Damascus, Aleppo, Homs, and Hama all reported an end to the blackout, which has been blamed on the government. The government, however, attributes the disconnection to either terrorists or plain old technical difficulties. It is still unclear whether the whole country is back online.

The friend in question was confirmed on Friday afternoon: Dunham’s co-star, Jemima Kirke (who plays Jessa Johansson on the show) recently gave birth to a son. Kirke named the baby, her second child, Memphis. Maybe his famous future lies not in hipsterdom but in country music?
