    1. Report: Obama Picks Kerry for State

With Susan Rice out of the running, President Obama has made up his mind to nominate Sen. John Kerry to be the next secretary of state, according to ABC News’s Jake Tapper. Tapper also reports that although the decision is final, an announcement on the matter won’t be made for a few more days due to other Cabinet shuffles and respect for the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut. A Kerry pick wouldn't be a big surprise—back in Massachusetts, Democrats and Republicans alike are already scrambling to position themselves to fill the Senate seat that would open up.

The gunman who opened fire on the children of Sandy Hook Elementary reportedly “riddled them with bullets,” shooting some of them as many as 11 times, according to the medical examiner. A team of 14 medical technicians worked through the night to perform the horrific job of identifying the 26 people—including 20 children—allegedly killed by 20-year-old Adam Lanza. Chief Medical Examiner H. Wayne Carver II said the gunshot wounds were “all over” the children’s bodies. According to the Sandy Hook school directory, all of the children killed were first-graders. The names of all 26 victims were released Saturday.

    3. Clinton Faints, Suffers Concussion

Hillary Clinton is really having a rough week. The secretary of state fainted on Saturday and suffered a concussion. She is currently recovering at home. Her fall comes after she had to cancel a trip to the Middle East after coming down with a stomach virus on Monday. It's unclear at the moment whether the two events are related. Clinton will work from home for the next week, aides said—and she probably will not testify as scheduled in the congressional hearings on the Benghazi attack.

The names of the 20 children and six adults killed at a massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary school on Friday were just released. Eight were boys and 12 were girls, all were age 6 or 7. Connecticut's chief medical examiner Dr. Wayne Carver says the wounds were "devastating" and he believes everyone was shot more than once, but says the victims didn't suffer for very long. He has not performed autopsies on shooter Adam Lanza or his mother, Nancy. For the excruciating task of identifying the children, Carver showed pictures of their faces to the parents.“It’s easier on the families when you do this,” Carver said. “I’ve been at this for a third of a century and  my sensibility may not be the average man’s, but this is probably the worst I’ve seen.”

As the father of two children, President Obama has been visibly distraught over the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary. On Sunday, he plans to visit Newtown, Conn., to meet with victims’ families and first responders. At 7 p.m., he will speak publicly at an interfaith vigil for the school’s families. On Friday, the president held a press conference where, wiping tears from his eyes, he spoke of “the beautiful little kids” and said “I know there’s not a parent in America who doesn’t feel the same overwhelming grief that I do.”

Could this be a workable compromise? House Speaker John Boehner has reportedly said he would agree to a hike in tax rates for the wealthiest Americans if President Obama gives in to big entitlement cuts, according to several sources. The proposed deal would raise Bush-era tax rates for top earners, in exchange for a slower-growing Medicare and other health programs. Obama and Boehner spoke via phone on Friday and have been talking regularly, which hints that progress could be advancing in the fiscal cliff negotiations.

Suicide bombers carrying rockets attacked an airport in Peshawar, Pakistan, on Saturday, leaving nine dead and dozens more injured. Three rockets were fired at the airport and a car bomb was set off outside, leaving four civilians and five militants dead, while 36 were injured, including six women and three children. The city is a main hub for al Qaeda and Taliban fighters and has sustained attacks previously. The airport serves both civilians and the government’s air force—which was the main target of the attack.

At a memorial for Jacintha Saldanha, the nurse found dead after a hoax phone call for the Duchess of Cambridge, her family painted a picture of a deeply devoted mother, the “core of the family.” Following a mass at Westminster Abbey, held in her honor, Saldanha’s husband, Benedict, eulogized their 19 years of marriage. “Without your beautiful smile and sparkling personality, the house is an empty place to live,” he said. In a joint statement, Saldanha’s children, daughter Lisha, 14, and son Junal, 16, expressed their sorrow and shock. The official funeral for Saldanha, who was found hanged eight days ago, will be held at Our Lady of Health Church in Karnataka, India on Monday.

Play it again, Sam. One of the two pianos featured in the classic movie Casablanca was sold for $600,000 at a Sotheby's auction on Friday. Offered for sale by an anonymous Japanese collector who wished to commemorate the film's 70th anniversary, the piano was expected to bring in as much as $1.2 million. The instrument was featured in one of the movie's Paris flashback scenes, in which the pianist character Sam plays "As Time Goes By" while Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman lean on it, toasting champagne and whispering sweet nothings.

Hundreds packed into a small church Friday in Newtown, Conn., to honor the 26 slain—20 of whom were children—earlier in the day at Sandy Hook Elementary School. With the church filled to capacity, hundreds stood outside holding hands, lighting candles, and saying prayers. Gov. Dannel Malloy was among the speakers addressing the crowd. 12. Obama: Solidarity After CT Shooting

President Obama urged solidarity with the grieving families in his weekly radio address on Saturday morning—but he stopped short of criticizing the nation’s gun laws. In a more subdued speech than the one he gave Friday, when he tearfully referred to the victims as “our children,” the president requested Americans to remind the town's families "that we are praying for them.” The decision to stay quiet on gun control is not universal, with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg roundly criticizing the White House and Washington for not taking up the issue in the wake of the shooting. At least 27 people, including 20 children, were shot and killed by Adam Lanza at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., on Friday, before Lanza turned the gun on himself.

If horror movies are right, this might not end well. Australian officials announced on Saturday plans to drill into a 2,000-year-old ice core in Antarctica to examine how the planet has evolved and what might happen next. The project, also backed by the United States, France, and Denmark, will spend eight weeks drilling through 400 meters of ice and will provide much more detailed information about past climate change than has previously been available. Just watch out for the Thing.

The Philippines declared an 18-day unilateral truce on Saturday with Maoist guerillas, whom the government has been fighting for 40 years—in time for the holiday season. The move is also intended to free up manpower to restore Mindano Island, which was devastated by a typhoon on December 4 and where rebels are active. Currently both the state Army and the communist New People's Army are involved in relief efforts. Peace on earth and goodwill toward men, indeed.

Weeks after a proposed new constitutional draft resulted in violence across the country, Egypt's electorate heads to voting stations on Saturday to determine the fate of the country. Erring on the side of caution, the government has sent soldiers and police to guard most polling places to prevent more rioting. The referendum, which is backed by Islamists and opposed by secular and Christian factions, would grant President Morsi "sweeping powers" and will be up for a vote this Saturday and next. It is expected to pass.

Police said on Saturday that suspected gunman Adam Lanza forced his way into the Sandy Hook Elementary School before going on a shooting rampage that killed 26 people, including 20 children. Those who knew Lanza said Saturday that he was "deeply disturbed" and "subject to outbursts,” and that he had "a lot of mental problems." Lanza also reportedly shot and killed his mother, who was suspected to have been connected to the school, although there are conflicting reports about her exact role there. The firearms Lanza allegedly used were purchased legally by his mother.

Hugh Grant is accepting the “worst guest” title given to him by Jon Stewart. “Turns out my inner crab got the better of me with TV producer in 09,” Grant tweeted. “Unforgivable. J Stewart correct to give me kicking.” Jon Stewart declared actor Hugh Grant to be the worst guest he has ever had on The Daily Show. “And we’ve had dictators on the show,” Stewart said. Stewart made the revelation while being interviewed by Stephen Colbert last week, and Stewart was quick to answer when asked to name his least favorite guest. “He’s giving everyone shit the whole time, and he’s a big pain in the ass.” The talk-show host added that he would “never” have Grant back.

Paging CSI. In an incident straight out of the hit television show, a man at the Excalibur hotel in Las Vegas shot a concierge vendor and then himself Friday night. The shooting occurred around 8:30 p.m. in the front lobby of the establishment and left the man dead at the scene, while the woman he shot was pronounced dead at the hospital. Their relationship is unclear. No one else in the crowded lobby was wounded, and the hotel remains open for business.
