    1. A-Rod Caught in Steroid Probe

Yankee Pitcher Alex Rodriguez is once again the center of a doping scandal. Investigators for Major League Baseball say they have evidence that one of A-Rod’s representatives purchased medical records from someone connected to a now-defunct anti-aging clinic in Miami believed to have dispensed performance-enhancing drugs to a number of MLB players. Two baseball insiders have now confirmed to The New York Times that Rodriguez bought documents from the clinic so that they could destroy evidence of his use of banned substances like human growth hormone. A spokesman for Rodriguez denied the allegation Friday.

    2. Three CA Teens Arrested After Girl’s Suicide

Three teenage boys were arrested Thursday in California for the sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl who committed suicide after photos of the alleged attack were published online. “Based on what we know, she was unconscious. There were multiple boys in the room with her,” said attorney Robert Allan, who represents the girl’s family. “They did unimaginable things to her.” The Santa Clara district attorney’s office did not comment on the case, because the suspects are minors. The arrests come in the same week as the world reacted in horror to a similar case involving a Canadian girl who killed herself amid alleged bullying after being raped.

    3. Two Wounded in VA School Shooting

Two women were wounded in a shooting Friday at a community college in southwestern Virginia, just hours after a man was spotted carrying a rifle on a North Carolina campus. The shooting occurred around 2 p.m. at the New River Community College in Christianburg’s campus at a local mall. Police have confirmed that one of the victims was airlifted out, and the second was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. Their identities have not been revealed. Police say the suspected shooter is currently in custody and that there was no continuing threat to the community, though Montgomery County schools were briefly locked down as a precaution.

    5. French Study: Breasts ‘Less Saggy’ Sans Bra

After all these years of thinking bras were helping our breasts defy gravity, a French researcher has evidence that the soutien-gorge is making breasts (gasp!) saggier. Professor Jean-Denis Rouillon used calipers to measure changes in the breasts of 330 women ages 18 to 35 over 15 years and found that wearing a brassiere actually prevents “supporting tissues” from growing and causes breasts to “wither” and “gradually degrade.” The study also found that bras don’t alleviate back pain—in fact, they make it worse. Rouillon’s findings have prompted a spirited debate over the merits of bras, with some commentators speculating whether the research could prompt a 1970s bra-burning revival. But before you ditch your favorite Victoria’s Secret push-up, take note: Rouillon said his research was “preliminary,” so you can keep your bra on—for now.

    6. Comedian Jonathan Winters Dead at 87

Comedy legend Jonathan Winters, whose TV and movie career spanned more than five decades, passed away Thursday at his Montecito, California, home of natural causes, the AP reports. Winters was known for his improv work, which inspired new generations of stand-up comedians, including Robin Wiliams and Jim Carrey. He hosted The Jonathan Winters Show from 1967 to 1969, frequently appeared in character on late-night shows with Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, and Steve Allen, and most notably played the role of Lennie Pike in the 1963 film It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. His most recent role was voicing Papa Smurf in the 2011 film The Smurfs, a role he reprised for this summer’s upcoming The Smurfs 2.

    7. Warren: Son Used Unregistered Gun

Rick Warren’s son Matthew shot and killed himself with an unregistered gun, the pastor and police confirmed Thursday. “Someone on the Internet sold Matthew an unregistered gun,” Warren wrote on Twitter. “I pray he seeks God’s forgiveness. I forgive him.” A spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said it was impossible to tell if the gun was registered, because the serial number had been scratched off, which is against federal law. Matthew Warren, 27, the son of megachurch pastor and The Purpose Driven Life author Rick Warren, shot and killed himself Saturday.

    8. Ball Chairs Don’t Improve Posture

This just in: sitting on a giant exercise ball during your 12-hour workday isn’t better than sitting on a regular old chair. Researchers at the University of Waterloo in Ontario had sprightly, young volunteers sit alternately on a ball, an office chair, and a backless stool while machines measured muscle activity in their core and lower backs and found no significant differences. They don’t improve posture or reduce back pain, and they don’t give you abs of steel. So do they serve any purpose other than making you look foolish? One 2008 study found workers burned roughly four more calories per hour on ball chairs, but they were also more likely to fall over while reaching for the stapler, hence the foolishness.

    9. ‘Glee’ Depicts School Shooting

If you have to ask, it's probably too soon. The Glee episode, titled “Shooting Star,” tackled a school shooting, just a few months after the massacre in Newtown, Connecticut. At the fictional McKinley High, the cheerleading coach insisted she felt safer having a gun in school “in light of recent events. I feel more safe with it in my office.” Creator Ryan Murphy tweeted last week that he was excited about the episode, calling it “the most powerful, emotional Glee ever.” But the Newtown Action Alliance sent an email Thursday warning families not to watch the show or to “watch with caution.”

    11. France Passes Gay-Marriage Bill

Get ready for the gay-marriage industry to hit Paris. France’s Parliament on Friday approved gay marriage, putting it on track to be legal by this summer—despite that the country remains divided over the issue. French President François Hollande has already promised to sign the legislation. The country has been in somewhat of a crisis over the issue: the Roman Catholic Church has led fierce opposition to gay marriage, and many French people are against adoption by gay couples, which would be allowed under the new legislation.

    12. Report: Twitter to Launch Music App

Tweet this song? It could be possible. The social-networking site reportedly created a standalone music app, launching possibly as early as Friday. AllThingsD reported that the app will suggest artists and tracks to users based on factors such as what musicians they follow on Twitter. On Thursday Twitter announced that it had acquired We Are Hunted, a startup music app that tracks the most popular songs on any social network at any given time. It looks like expanding into music has been a goal of Twitter’s for a while: the company also bought a music-recommendation service.

    14. Hopi Masks Auctioned in Paris

Dozens of sacred American Indian tribal masks went on sale at a Paris auction house Friday, after a French court rejected appeals blocking the auction. Arizona’s Hopi Indians have insisted that they represent their deceased ancestors’ spirits—Hopis feed and look after the masks as if they are the living dead—with star support from Robert Redford and the U.S. ambassador to Paris. In its ruling, the court recognized the masks’ “sacred value,” but said that “clearly they cannot be assimilated to human bodies or elements of bodies of humans who exist or existed.”

How long before the queen tells Kate that watching Keeping Up With the Kardashians is just not a good look? The Duchess of Cambridge reportedly watches the reality TV show “religiously,” according to a source close to Kate. Apparently the expectant duchess decided to tune in after hearing that Kim, also pregnant, was a big fan of hers—and now Kate’s hooked. “People forget that Kate is just a normal girl, who married into royalty, and enjoys the same trashy TV shows most people do,” the source says. Wills, born into royalty, has rather different tastes and allegedly “makes fun of her for liking it so much,” the source told the Daily Star.

In Missouri and Illinois, thousands were left without power, with at least eight homes destroyed in the St. Louis neighborhood the Hill. Severe flooding was reported in Michigan. 19. John Kerry Heads to Seoul

Do they or don’t they? Amid Pentagon reports that it would be “inaccurate” to suggest that North Korea has proven its nuclear-missile ability—despite a classified report from the Defense Intelligence Agency on Thursday—U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Seoul. In a news conference, Kerry reaffirmed the U.S.’s support of its allies and called North Korea’s ramped-up rhetoric “unacceptable.” He said that the U.S. would be willing to enter talks with Kim Jong-un only if he’s serious about denuclearization. Asked if war is imminent, a U.S. official in Seoul said “not at all.” An official said Washington’s greatest concern is Kim Jong-un’s “youth and inexperience” leading to a “miscalculation” of the situation.

    20. Actress Loses Suit With IMDB

Actress Junie Hoang, 41, lost a lawsuit against the movie website IMDB after it published her real age—which she said had caused her to lose out on roles in Hollywood. IMDB had uncovered her true age by checking a credit card that she used to open her account on the site and confirmed it with a third-party database. Hoang had claimed to be seven years younger. Hoang said she was discriminated against once Hollywood learned her true age, and before anyone knew her actual birth date, she had been hired to play characters in their late 20s and 30s. But IMDB had argued it has the right to publish the truth, with attorneys for the site calling Hoang “selfish.” Maybe Hoang had dreamed of starring in the next CW show.
