    1. Over 50 Dead in Iraq Clashes

Violence raged throughout Iraq on Wednesday, leaving 51 people dead in different parts of the country. Thirty-eight people were killed in a clash between Sunni tribesmen and members of the Iraqi Army that erupted along blocked roads leading to Qara Tappah, a Sunni town northeast of Baghdad. Meanwhile, seven people were killed and 23 others wounded by a car bomb that exploded in a Shiite neighborhood in Baghdad. Increased Sunni backlash against the Shiite-led government seems to be the source of boiling tensions that have led to 100 deaths over the past two days. “Everybody has the feeling that Iraq is becoming a new Syria,” a currency-exchange owner in Mosul told the AP. “We are heading into the unknown ... I think that civil war is making a comeback.”

Three people are injured Wednesday night after two fuel barges exploded on the Mobile River in Alabama. The barges were filled with natural gas and exploded not far from where a Carnival cruise ship was docked. Three people by the barges were taken home with burn injuries, and a one-mile safety radius has been set up around the barges. Officials say they believe all the potentially injured are accounted for.

The Russian parents of Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing case, have agreed to visit the U.S. to assist officials in the ongoing investigation, a police source told RIA Novosti on Wednesday. A team from the U.S. Embassy in Moscow traveled to the volatile southern republic of Dagestan to speak to the Tsarnaevs, who consented to involvement in the U.S. investigation. Anzor Tsarnaev, the suspects' father, also said on Wednesday that he doubted his surviving son's ability to give testimony. "He [Dzhokhar Tsarnaev] is giving no testimony," he said. "He is even unable to speak."

    4. Report: Tsarnaev Had No Firearms

Despite fears that he was heavily armed, multiple federal law-enforcement officials say that the younger of the two Boston bombing suspects, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was not armed when police fired at him in the boat where he was hiding. According to The Washington Post, the FBI has declined to discuss what triggered the gunfire, but other authorities say the shooting may have been caused by the “chaos of the moment” and activity in the boat that may have led police to believe that Tsarnaev had fired a gun or was about to denotate an explosive. “Hours earlier he and his brother had killed a police officer, shot another officer, and thrown explosives out of their cars as the police were chasing them,” one officer told the Post. “They couldn’t assume that he did not have a gun and more explosives.”

Fear not, New York Post, Anthony Weiner may have some more dirty laundry yet. The former U.S. representative would neither confirm nor deny to an RNN-TV reporter if the salacious photos that forced him to retire in 2011 are the only ones out there, basically inviting reporters on a scavenger hunt. "If reporters want to go try to find more, I can't say that they're not going to be able to find another picture, or another ... person who may want to come out on their own, but I'm not going to contribute to that," he said. "The basics of the story are not gonna change."

Somehow the ricin case has taken an even stranger turn. Charges were dropped against Paul Kevin Curtis, the Elvis impersonating conspiracy theorist initially believed to have mailed ricin-laced letters, and federal authorities moved on to search the house of disgraced politician J. Everett Dutschke. Curtis’s lawyer had previously suggested that Dutschke might have framed Curtis because of a feud, which Curtis said might be related to a conflict from when they studied tae kwon do together. Dutschke, a failed political candidate currently facing child-molestation charges, is also a tae kwon do teacher and frontman of a band called Dusty and the RoboDrum, which on Facebook is described as “Live-Loop Oriented Rock with tons of lasers.”

After being released, Paul Kevin Curtis gave quite an amusing press conference.

The report says Lakhan "admitted to the possession of the cannabis, stating that it was for personal use.” The National Enquirer claims to have caught the first image of Lakhan, in a brown Rastafarian-style hat.

President Obama told the Today show that he and Michelle have told their daughters, “If you guys ever decided you’re going to get a tattoo, then Mommy and me will get the exact same tattoo in the same place. And we’ll go on YouTube and show it off as a family tattoo.” Obama also addressed an interview in which Michelle called herself a “busy single mother” before correcting herself. Thousands of police officers, students, MIT faculty, and staff, gathered to pay their respects to Collier, snaking through metal detectors and bomb-sniffing dogs. Along with Collier’s family, Vice President Joe Biden is scheduled to speak at the service. Meanwhile, Boylston Street, the site of the bombings, was reopened to the public Wednesday morning.

Hundreds gathered at the site of the accident—where officials fear more remain trapped under the rubble. Health Minister A.F.M. Bangladesh has received harsh criticism for its factory conditions after two other deadly fires at garment factories in the past year—one of which left 112 dead.

    18. Iowa Man Says More Abortion Docs Should Be Shot

An anti-abortion activist in Iowa with ties to Scott Roeder, the man who murdered abortion provider George Tiller, is under fire for calling for the shooting of the people who reopened Tiller’s abortion clinic. “If someone would shoot the new abortionists, like Scott shot George Tiller ... It will be a blessing to the babies,” Dave Leach says on a YouTube video. The clip features a recorded conversation between Leach and a man Leach identified as Roeder, who is currently serving life in prison for Tiller’s assassination. Citing an anti-abortion activist who predicted that the abortion “industry” would end if 100 doctors were shot, the man identified as Roeder says, “I think eight have been shot, so we've got 92 to go.” He then suggests that the new clinic director might be No. 9, saying, “I’m not sure about that. But she's kind of painting a target on her.” Prison officials are investigating whether the man on the recording was indeed Roeder, and, if it was, how he was able to participate in such a phone call.

The Tsarnaevs’ aunt said Wednesday that a Boston mosque that the brothers attended will not allow them to hold a funeral there for Tamerlan, who was killed last week after a shootout with police. Tsarnaev is suspected of carrying out the deadly Boston Marathon bombing that killed three and injured more than 200, as well as killing an MIT campus police officer three days later. The aunt, Patimat Suleimanova, said she did not know the name of the mosque, but that the burial request had also been denied. The brothers were known to have attended the Islamic Society of Boston mosque in Cambridge, and a spokesman for the mosque said burying Tsarnaev is a “complex” situation because “what the guy did was absolutely disgraceful.” Members of the mosque have been questioned by police.

Everybody likes more cash. Apple CEO Tim Cook announced on Tuesday that the company will buy back more of its stock, promising to return a total of $100 billion to shareholders by 2015. That makes it the largest buyback plan in American corporate history. The decision comes on the heels of a dismal company report of an 18 percent decline in the first quarter of 2013—and a total 40 percent decline since September. Shares rose in German markets upon hearing the news, but the U.S. market remained relatively unchanged. Apple’s stock is now cheaper than 94 percent of the companies on the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index.

One day after The New York Times’s scathing review of Brian Stelter’s book comes a dishy Politico article slamming the legendary newspaper’s management. The 1,700-word manifesto, posted Wednesday, explores the state of the Times under executive editor Jill Abramson. The piece features anonymous sources complaining that Abramson is “impossible” and claiming she’s “on the verge of losing support” in her own newsroom. “Every editor has a story about how she has blown up in a meeting,” one reporter said. Staffers also criticized Abramson for being absent from the newsroom, although a Times spokesman insisted Abramson needs to travel to “represent the newsroom.” But there’s a bright side for Abramson: the paper in dispute won four Pulitzers last week. Still, many worry it may not be enough to quiet the discontent in the newsroom.

    25. Iowa Reps Threaten Reduced Pay

According to some conservative members of the Iowa House of Representatives, the four Iowa Supreme Court justices who voted in 2009 to kill a ban on same-sex marriage deserve to have their salaries decreased. It’s the only suitable way to “maintain the balance of power” between the three branches of government after those justices so disgracefully “trashed” it, they argue. Paying those four justices less than the rest isn’t a punishment, insists Republican Rep. Dwayne Alons, a proponent of the amendment, which says that the specified pay cut would go into effect when Iowans pass a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. “We’re just holding them responsible for their decision, for going beyond their bounds,” Alons said.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev struggled financially, receiving welfare benefits for his family up until last year—when he became ineligible based on his income level, says the AP. The report sheds additional light on Tamerlan, whose uncle spoke out Tuesday to place blame for the attacks on a mysterious Muslim radical who he claims steered Tamerlan toward fundamentalism. “Somehow, he just took [Tamerlan’s] brain,” Tamerlan’s uncle Ruslan Tsarni said. The radical, known to the family only as Misha, pushed Tamerlan to give up boxing and studying music. Sources told The Boston Globe on Tuesday that Russian authorities contacted the U.S. “multiple” times about Tamerlan, including at least once after the FBI investigated his trip to Russia in 2011.
