    2. Kiev: Peaceful Resolution ‘Futile’

Ukraine’s interior ministry has deemed efforts to peacefully negotiate and resolve unrest in the capital “futile.” Minister Vitaliy Zakharchenko blamed the failure of negotiations with the protesters on “radical groups” and added that protesters had arms. The comments came at the same time that activists tried to seize the energy ministry. Four protesters and a policeman have reportedly died since the unrest began last year after Ukraine rejected a treaty with the European Union.

A “celebrity” Saudi preacher who admitted to using a cane and cables to inflict multiple injuries on his five-year-old daughter—including a crushed skull, broken back, broken ribs, a broken left arm and extensive bruising and burns, in addition to signs that she had been repeatedly raped and burnt—has been released after only a few months in jail and payment of “blood money.” Fayhan al-Ghamadi is accused of raping, torturing and killing his daughter, named Lama, after doubting the five-year-old’s virginity and taking her to a doctor. The judge is reported as saying, “Blood money and the time the defendant had served in prison since Lama’s death suffices as punishment.” Al-Ghamdi is said to have paid around $50,000 to the girl’s mother.

    5. Pope: We Need More Roles for Women

El Papa believes women should take on “more capillary and incisive” roles in the Roman Catholic Church. While addressing the Italian Women’s Centre, Pope Francis said he has been pleased to see women taking on more pastoral responsibilities alongside priests and families. He also praised them for their “gifts of delicacy” and “special sensitivity and tenderness” but before he completely gave into outdated gender stereotypes, he also said that women’s role in the workplace should be expanded as well. “This is important, for without these attitudes, without these contributions of the woman, the human vocation would not be realized,” he said. Sure, we’ll take it.

This is reassuring. The Pentagon is prepared to evacuate American citizens from the Sochi Winter Olympics in the case of a terrorist attack, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said on Friday. “If we need to extract our citizens we’ll have appropriate arrangements with the Russians to do this,” he assured. At least 10,000 Americans will be in attendance, and the Obama administration has recently warned of an uptick in terrorist threats after suicide bombings killed 30 last month in nearby Volgorad.

America’s first Twitter libel trial has ended—and Courtney Love has come out on top. A jury decided on Friday that the Hole frontwoman did not post a tweet insinuating that her former attorney, Rhonda Holmes, accepted a bribe with a reckless disregard for the truth. Though the jury agreed that the tweet was false and likely injurious to Holmes, it was not convinced that Love didn’t believe it to be true. When asked, “Did Rhonda Holmes prove by clear and convincing evidence that Courtney Love knew it was false or doubted the truth of it?” the jury responded, “No.”

When Romney said he’d be supporting the candidates in 2016 “100 percent,” Fallon responded with “Don’t you mean 47 percent?” Zing!
