Elizabeth Edwards Dies at 61

After a six-year fight against breast cancer, Elizabeth Edwards died Tuesday at her home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Edwards, an author, attorney, and the estranged wife of former Senator John Edwards, posted a Facebook message on Monday in which she explained that she had ended her cancer treatment. She thanked her “three saving graces—my family, my friends, and a faith in the power of resilience and hope.” Edwards was hospitalized last week, where doctors told her that “further treatment of her cancer would be unproductive,” according to a statement from her family. Her friends and family—including John Edwards—were with her.
