Obama Signs DADT Repeal

President Obama signed legislation repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell on Wednesday, saying the bill is “the right thing to do for our military,” and “the right thing to do, period.” In signing the bill, Obama made good on a campaign promise, and was rewarded with an audience cheering “Yes, we can.” Obama thanked backers of the bill, including Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Harry Reid, GOP Sen. Susan Collins, and Sen. Joe Lieberman. Though the bill has been signed into law, before the policy can go into effect military leaders and Obama must certify the Pentagon study that said allowing gays to serve openly would have no long-lasting negative consequences, and then wait 60 days. "No longer will tens of thousands of Americans in uniform be asked to live a lie," he said.
