Anna Hazare, India's most famous anti-corruption activist, has left prison and begun a public hunger strike. Hazare's arrest on Tuesday sent thousands of protesters into the streets. Authorities immediately tried to release him, but Hazare refused to leave unless the government freed him unconditionally. Yesterday the two sides reached a compromise that allows Hazare to protest in central New Delhi. Nearly 2,000 activists cheered outside the jail as Hazare was released and showered him with rose petals. Hazare is demanding the government pass his version of a proposed bill for a powerful anti-corruption ombudsman.
