Large Gathering for Troy Davis Funeral

More than 1,000 family members and supporters turned out for the funeral of Troy Davis, who insisted he was innocent as he was executed in Georgia on Sept. 21. The funeral at Jonesville Baptist Church in Savannah began with a slideshow of photos of Davis in his prison uniform with his mother, sister, and other family members. Davis's family opened up the ceremony to the public, and the pastor who delivered the eulogy said he hoped Davis's funeral will raise awareness of the death penalty, much as the 1955 lynching of Emmett Till showed America the realities of Jim Crow. Davis was executed for the 1989 slaying of Savannah police officer Mark MacPhail.
