Clinton: U.S. to Push Pakistan 'Very Hard'

At a joint press conference in Kabul with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the U.S. expects Pakistan to “take the lead” in both fighting insurgents within its own borders and also persuading Afghan militants to reconcile with the Afghan government. "We intend to push Pakistan very hard," Clinton said. Karzai, meanwhile, said that, given its ties to the Taliban, Pakistan is the appropriate “authority” and “venue” for any peace talks. Clinton will have a chance to make good on her intention later Thursday, as she flies to Pakistan to meet with CIA Director David Petraeus and senior Pakistan officials.
