Oakland is picking up the pieces after violent overnight clashes between Occupy protesters and police. The Port of Oakland, the nation's fifth largest, has reopened. At least four protesters were hospitalized and dozens arrested after they broke into vacant buildings, shattered windows, set fires, and fought with riot police. Before the protest turned violent, around 3,000 protesters converged on the Port of Oakland and blocked exits with cars and fences, part of what activists declared a general strike. They removed the barricades this morning and the port reopened. Protesters have disavowed the violence.
