You’re bound to see lots of nice words written about veterans today, but for perhaps the most stirring tribute, go to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Originally published in 1995, the house editorial answers the question: “What is a Vet?” “He is the Nebraska farmer who worries every year that his time the bank really will foreclose ... He is the barroom loudmouth, dumber than five wooden planks, whose overgrown frat-boy behavior is outweighed a hundred times in the cosmic scales by four hours of exquisite bravery near then 39th Parallel.” It serves as a good reminder that the reality of war—and life after—is far separated from the latest Call of Duty game.
