This photo provided by the Virginia State Police shows Ross Truett Ashley, age 22. Police identified the Virginia Tech gunman on Friday as Ross Truett Ashley, a part-time college student from nearby Radford University, though they still have not been able to say what led him to kill a police officer and then himself.

Police have identified the man who killed a Virginia Tech campus police officer Thursday as 22-year-old Ross Truett Ashley, a student at the nearby Radford University. Ashley killed himself after shooting the officer and sending the campus into lockdown. Police knew his name, but withheld it from the press until Friday because his family had not yet been informed. Ashley is likely the same man who stole a white Mercedes SUV in Radford on Wednesday, police said. Virginia Tech is the site of the largest college-shooting-rampage in recent memory, a 2007 massacre that left 32 people dead.
