Santorum: Puerto Ricans Don't Have to Speak English

Apparently, when Rick Santorum said Puerto Rico would need to make English its official language if it ever wants to become a state, he didn't really mean that. "Obviously Spanish would be the language here," he said Thursday. What actually he meant was that Puerto Ricans should learn English. "That's something that I think is essential to be an American period, whether you're going to be a state or not, people should speak English and it should be a common language among all Americans," he said, insisting that his comments during an interview with a Puerto Rican newspaper Wednesday had been "maliciously" twisted.
