Eighteen-year-old Aaron Deveau was sentenced to two years in prison for causing a fatal car crash by texting while driving. Deveau will also lose his license for 15 years. He was the first person in Massachusetts to face the charge, to which he had pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors claimed Deveau was texting in February 2011, when he swerved over the center line and collided with Daniel Bowley’s truck in Haverhill, Mass., killing the father of three. The judge said that deterrence “really seems to come to play in this case,” adding that people need to “keep their eyes on the road.”
