The Muslim Brotherhood declared Sunday that its candidate, Mohamed Morsi, had won the country’s first free election, beating out former Mubarak minister Ahmed Shafik. The announcement on the Brotherhood party’s official website came hours after military leaders in the country had given more power to armed forces, seemingly limiting the power of the president-to-be and calling for a new constitution to be drafted. According to Brotherhood tallies, Morsi led 52 percent to 48 percent with 95 percent of polling stations reporting. One Shafik staffer said that he did “not accept” the numbers.
