A new report from the Jewish Voice from Germany newspaper claims Adolf Hitler personally spared the life of a Jewish man. The man, Ernst Hess, was a soldier in World War I, and though he was raised and married to a Protestant, he was considered a “full-blooded Jew” by the Nazis. However, the Jewish Voice’s editor recently discovered a 1940 note to the Gestapo from SS head Heinrich Himmler to spare and protect Hess “as per the Führer’s wishes.” Unfortunately for Hess, the Führer’s uncharacteristic compassion was only temporary. Hess was ultimately sent to a concentration camp.
