Ecuador’s president said on Tuesday that he hopes he can announce this week whether political asylum will be granted to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Rafael Correa told state TV that international law needed to be examined in the extradition decision. Assange sought refuge in Ecuador’s embassy in June to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he’s wanted for questioning for alleged sexual misconduct. Ecuador has said it is worried that Assange could then be extradited to the U.S., where his supporters believe he is being secretly indicted.
