An American gunman was killed by a military counterterrorism squad after a shootout in a hotel in the Israeli city of Eilat. Authorities say the man “grabbed a weapon from a security guard and shot a hotel worker,” who later died. The gunman then barricaded himself in the kitchen, shooting at police who had surrounded the hotel, until he was finally shot dead. Eilat has been targeted by militants before, but officials say that the motive appeared to be criminal, not political, as the gunman was a former employee of the hotel.
