Ballet Chief ‘Regaining Sight’

This picture taken on April 7, 2011 shows artistic director of the Bolshoi theatre Sergei Filini speaking with media at the Bolshoi theatre in Moscow. Filin was hospitalised with severe burns after an assailant threw acid on his face, police said on January 18, 2013. Filin, who is a former acclaimed dancer and was appointed to his post in 2011, suffered injuries to the face, head and eyes late when the attacker cornered him near a residential house in central Moscow, police told Russian news agencies. Doctors said that the Bolshoi Ballet’s artistic director will have sight in at least one eye when he recovers from an acid attack. An eyesight specialist said Sergei Filin “is regaining sight faster in one eye, but I think that we are going to even things out for both,” and added that the recovery process “will take a lot of time.” Filin suffered third-degree burns to his face when a masked man cornered him near his Moscow home and attacked him with sulfuric acid. Several dancers have since reported infighting at the Bolshoi, but choreographer Svetlana Adyrkhayeva said, “This is just theater. Normal people do not behave in this manner.”
