    8.0 Quake Prompts Tsunami Alert

    After a strong 8.0-magnitude earthquake hit near the Solomon Islands, officials have issued a tsunami warning for several South Pacific islands. The earthquake hit the Santa Cruz Islands, a scarcely populated group in the Solomon Islands, prompting an alert for nearby Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, Fiji, among others. A tsunami watch is in effect for New Zealand, Australia, American Samoa and eastern Indonesia.
