White House Supports Phone ‘Unlocking’

The White House announced Monday that it supports efforts to allow Americans to legally use cellphones and tablets not under contract with any wireless carrier they choose. The White House and the FCC said they will ask Congress to make the process, known as “unlocking,” legal once again. Back in January, the Copyright Office of the Library of Congress banned the popular process, making it a crime that carries penalties of up to $500,000 and five years in prison.
