Dozens Die in Sudan Mine Collapse

A gold-mine collapse in western Sudan this week has killed at least 60 people, state-run Ashorooq TV is reporting, and many more are still unaccounted for. The mine, in the town of El Serief in north Darfur, collapsed after miners dug in one of its most dangerous areas. One eyewitness blames the tragedy on the mines not being well organized. “The mining tunnels were very close to each other,” he said, and added that the mines in the region “were supposed to be closed and then reorganized.” Authorities say that anyone unaccounted for is being presumed dead.
