Capturing the win at the opening race of the Triple Crown season was jockey Joel Rosario—who some have called the "hottest jockey in America"—and his horse Orb. The pair beat out two jockeys hoping to make history, Kevin Krigger, the first African-American to ride since 1921, and Rosie Napravnik, the sixth female to ever participate in the race. Orb flew past Revolutionary and Golden Soul in the final seconds to capture the title. Speaking to reporters after the race, a mud-splattered Rosario described the run as a "perfect trip." Orb was a pre-race favorite to win.
