After a violent 24 hours, riot police in Istanbul fired tear gas in the city on Sunday morning to prevent a resurgence before a planned rally by Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's party. On Saturday night, police evicted protesters from Gezi Park with tear gas and water cannons. The action was followed by more protests. And although the rally is taking place on the other side of the city, the government doesn't seem to be taking any chances: in addition to the precautionary bursts of teargas, Taksim Square was sealed off after Saturday night's events. If the government is trying to avoid looking bad by hiding the events ... it's not working.
