The jam-packed weekend box office meant that although dystopian flick Elysium won the weekend, it was still a paltry $30.5 million domestic win. Starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, Sony and MRC hoped Elysium would bring in at least $35 million its opening weekend. Sony insisted it was happy with the result despite hopes that Elysium would be as big as director Neill Blomkamp’s 2009 sleeper hit District 9. The poorly reviewed Jason Sudeikis–Jennifer Aniston comedy We’re the Millers captured $38 million over a five-day debut, grossing $26.6 million over the weekend stretch alone. Disney’s Planes disappointed with just $22.5 million, Sea Monsters came in at No. 4 with $14.6 million, and rounding out the top five was 2 Guns, which fell 59 percent from its opening. Smurfs 2 and Elysium came in Nos. 1 and 2 in the global box office, grossing $44.1 million and $41.4 million respectively.
