Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have decided to separate, People reported on Wednesday. The couple, who have been married for almost 13 years, have not filed for divorce or legal separation yet, but sources told the magazine that they are spending time apart. In the past few years, Douglas battled cancer (he said he contracted HPV from oral sex), Zeta-Jones has been hospitalized for bipolar disorder, and Douglas’s son from his first marriage, Cameron, was sentenced to five years in prison for drug possession (and later an additional four and a half years for possessing drugs in prison). “The stress has taken a toll on their marriage,” a friend said. Douglas and Zeta-Jones have two children together: Dylan, 13, and Carys, 10.
