India is about to look a lot more like suburban America. Burger King announced Tuesday that it will be expanding its franchises into India—although the company has not decided yet whether it will sell its signature Whopper or other beef burgers. India has seen an influx of fast-food chains—McDonald’s opened its first location in 1996 and now has more than 300 restaurants. (No Quarter Pounders, though: It doesn't serve beef or pork, in keeping with Muslim and Hindu religious practices.) There are now 296 KFCs in India, 300 Pizza Huts, four Taco Bells, and a few Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts, too. “India is a market with huge potential for Burger King restaurants and we have the chance to offer the unique Burger King brand proposition to its consumers with our own local twist to the menu," said Elias Diaz Sese, president of BK AsiaPac Pte. Ltd.
